Torchlight MMO will be like SP, fun for microtransaction haters

Torchlight MMO will be like SP, fun for microtransaction haters

If you're reading this, you've probably already heard Runic Games is working on a free MMO version of their great action RPG Torchlight. We've known essentially nothing about the project until now -- studio president Travis Baldree has let loose a few details to get you started.

“Our vision is to have an MMO that plays as close to single player as we can get it," he says. "It will have the same focus on relatively fast action: carving your way through hordes of monsters with a large number of hugely devastating skills. The game has to be solo-able, but players will have to have skills that make them useful in a party and make them work together.”

The formula was already great anyway, so no sense in messing with it too much, we figure. The only weakness we found through our review was the game became somewhat monotonous in the later stages. With an online component and some team-based features, this could be perfect.

As the MMO is free, they'll be relying on microtransactions for support. Interestingly, Baldree openly admits he hates the stuff himself, so they'll be making the game fun for others like him. He says they "don’t want [their] monetisation stuff to offer ways to skip the game because the game is boring.”

Last we heard, the game is to be released sometime this year, though that may have changed since. We'll have more details as they come.
