The EA and Maxis project Darkspore which was leaked last week is now confirmed. The team best known for their work on The Sims franchise is now developing an action RPG with ties to the Spore series, though we learn today it will have an online game featuring four-player co-op or multiplayer, in addition to the single player.
As you can see from the concept art and screens here, it lives up to its name and takes on a dark aesthetic, and it looks fantastic. And unlike previous games in the series, this one sounds like it won't be "dumbed down." Rather, it's "rich" with action, fiction, abilities, upgrades and lots more.
The action is described as dynamic and fast-paced; you'll travel to different alien worlds to "save the galaxy from the mutated forces of Darkspore", whether it be with buddies or solo.
Your allies in either case will be "genetic heroes" with different abilities, upgradeable with tens of thousands of collectable body parts and armor. Unfortunately it sounds like the heroes will be not be completely customizable as hoped, but rather you can pick from three unique classes of five different hero types -- from there you can upgrade and customize like a madman.
Later in the game, increased difficulty means you'll have to play smart with what squad and abilities you choose.
Darkspore is set to launch early next year on PC.
