Company of Heroes going free-to-play

Company of Heroes going free-to-play

Relic Entertainment's World War-themed RTS series Company of Heroes is lauded by some as the greatest around. If you've not yet gotten into it, you'll have an easy chance soon, when Company of Heroes Online launches on PC with no charge.

Perhaps taking a cue from EA's success with the free-to-play model, publisher THQ will be relying on microtransactions for funding, which will come in the form of special units and upgrades.

Graphically speaking, it's quite impressive for a F2P title.

COHO (nice acronym, huh?) will take place in World War II-era Europe, where you will take control of one of six divisions -- each with a distinct combat style and "Commander Abilities" -- in up to 8 player matches. Progress is emphasized, as you'd expect in an online environment.

Company of Heroes Online is set to launch in September.
