Dungeons & Dragons Online revitalized by going free-to-play

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach last year (mostly) abandoned monthly subscription fees in favor of a free-to-play model supported by microtransactions through the MMORPG's Eberron Unlimited update. MMO operator Turbine this week confirms that going F2P paid off handsomely for DDO, even in the literal sense.

In addition to scoring over a million new players, the number of subscribers willing to pay for premium in-game content through the DDO Store more than doubled. Turbine claims transactions through the DDO Store are "three times the industry average", leading to a 500 percent increase in revenue from the title since the Eberron Unlimited update first launched last September.

A monthly subscription option remains available for players who would prefer "unlimited" access to all of game's content without needing to visit the DDO Store.

Spiritual sequel to Uplink, Subversion unveiled

Spiritual sequel to Uplink, Subversion unveiled

Uplink is one of the most beloved titles to computer gamers. A "cinematic hacking game", it garnered a lot of praise and community expansion in its heyday. Nine years later, it's coming back around again with Subversion, a spiritual sequel.

The game's been announced for several years now, but today is the first real reveal. Keeping in mind the screens shown here are early (Introversion's lead designer Chris Delay says "we've lots of plans for the look, but broadly speaking you are going to be looking at 3d blueprints"), the basic idea is, "what would Uplink look like if it was set in real buildings rather than inside a computer?"

The game will be set in a "high tech" environment; you'll command a team of skilled operatives in a "hostile, high security building." Sounds quite a bit like another PC classic, Syndicate, actually. Devices and abilities on hand will include Sabotage, Social Engineering and Grifting, custom Electrical and Mechanical devices, Distractions, Hacking, Stealth, Acrobatics, Precision demolitions, and Trickery.

Delay describes the tech demo with excitement:

[What] I showed on stage during BATFA showed how a team of two agents could infiltrate a high security office. They used a variety of gadgets like wall scanners and motion trackers to gradually unveil the office layout, which begins invisible and requires various Recon tactics until you have revealed the layout. One of the agents was caught and tazered by a security guard, but not before I'd hacked in and taken control of the cctv cameras dotted around the office. This massively expands your view of the location, and uncovered the primary target - a secure server room with some data we needed to destroy.

Delay notes they were developing the game "top down" (filling empty space with city elements) for a long time, but since going "bottom up" (building people, items and interactions for them first), they got to a tech demo state in five months. Though they're still in the experimental phase, "things are coming together rapidly now." We look forward to the eventual release of Subversion.

Starcraft II In Summer 2010

While there is no exact release date announced yet, the latest Blizzcast unexpectedly drops a solid timeframe of sorts for the release of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty.

You haven't asked this question yet, but I'll answer it ahead of time. We were targeting three to five months for the beta, we're really at a three month period of time for the beta at this point. We are still targeting the first half of this year, so with that in mind, it really shortens the window of time with our major content patch coming out pretty close to the end whether it's even worth it putting out the map editor at that point.

Okay, so we may not see the map editor tested during the beta. That little tidbit just became completely irrelevant if it means that the game is coming out three months from now and while there may be a gap between the end of beta and release, the statement would still point towards May-June 2010 release date for Starcraft II!

Assuming that everything goes fine during the beta test, obviously. Blizzard doesn't announce release dates 2174until they are sure they can meet them.

Yet I wouldn't worry too much - considering how smoothly the game works right now in beta, with almost no problems to speak of beyond the usual worries about unit and faction balance, I would say that the odds are good. It would also make sense in that a release later in 2010 would conflict with That Other Big Blizzard Release, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm , due in late 2010.

Alpha Protocol release date finalized

Alpha Protocol release date finalized

After a couple of delays, Sega has finally firmed up the release date for Obsidian espionage RPG Alpha Protocol: gamers can grab it May 28 in Europe, or June 1 in North America. The game has seen a bit of a troubled development cycle, so it's great to see a final date at last.

With the announcement comes new screenshots, a trailer, and -- awesomely enough -- new box art. Some will recall our dissapointment with the original art. As fate would have it, Sega seems to have taken feedback to heart and redone the covers, and we have to say they're some of the finest we've seen around.

Even more, the screenshots seem to show graphical improvements over previous ones. Sega noted the second delay was for "polish", one change there being lighting tweaks, and the results appear evident.

The trailer, meanwhile, should be more than sufficiently badass to whet your appetite until release. Featuring some great music and equally superb voice acting, it doesn't mess around.

Alan Wake too ambitious to be multiplatform, says Microsoft

Alan Wake too ambitious to be multiplatform, says Microsoft

Microsoft's explanation for the canning of Alan Wake on the PC was far from satisfactory to many -- even console gamers wondered what was up. Saying the title was better suited to being played "from the couch in front of a larger TV screen", we were in a state of puzzlement ourselves.

A Microsoft spokesperson has just now clarified the statement to us, saying, “Alan Wake has been an ambitious project from the start, and as such, has taken several years to be fully realized. To accelerate the game's delivery, we made the decision to focus exclusively on Xbox 360 and deliver Alan Wake this May.We have no plans to deliver a Windows version at this time.”

This seems like a fairly sensible response. As you may know, the game has been in development since at least 2005, starting off on the PC. Not to say console development isn't challenging (it certainly is), but certain extra efforts are required for PC releases, many in the testing department.

That combined with a simultaneous (or nearly so) multiplatform release would be reason enough for some to at least put off a PC version, given the already very lengthy development time. After all, no studio wants to be compared with 3D Realms.

Of course, Microsoft has previously stated at least one of the reasons for focusing on 360 is because there's more money in it overall:

"On a global scale the Windows Vista business is as important as our Xbox 360 business," explained Microsoft Game Studios' European business development manager Peter Zetterberg. "But in Germany for example, we want more gamers to buy our Xbox 360. If we launch a game that is on 360 and PC simultaneously, we basically shoot ourselves in the foot by allowing the German market to choose to play the PC version – because they are more likely to buy that than spend their money on the Xbox 360."

"On a global scale the PC is very relevant to us. And I would say that 90 per cent of the games that are pitched to us are on console. We're strongly perceived as a console publisher because we're the first-party publisher even though the Windows operating system is equally important to us. If we launched a Halo game on PC and 360 in Germany simultaneously, 80 per cent of sales would be on the PC. So we need to pick and choose our formats."

How relevant this stance is now, we can only speculate, but the good news is that "who knows" response.

Supreme Commander 2 gets new trailers, PC demo now available

Supreme Commander 2 got two more gameplay vids today going over the new Experimental Units. Added to the list of intimidating units already showcased are the Universal Colossus and the stationary Noah Unit Cannon.

Gas Powered Games and Square Enix have also released a demo for PC today, available for download via Steam, in case you're interested in trying out these babies yourself. The full game will be hitting PC and Xbox 360 on March 5.

The first is a massive robot that boosts armor for friendly units, and one of the most "intimidating, over-the-top" units in SC2, according to game designer and GPG founder Chris Taylor. While it does provide support with the armor buff, the Universal Colossus can fire a beam (major pew pew pew) that tears through enemies, and its two claws can suck enemy units straight up, just to screw with the other team.

The Noah Unit Cannon isn't all its name suggests. Rather than simply firing missiles or some straight-up explosives, the Noah can build a variety of assault units within itself. When these units are ready, it fires them as projectiles, clear across and deep into enemy territory.

Warner Bros. Acquires Rocksteady Studios

Taking a look at the business side of things today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has announced that they've acquired a majority stake in Batman: Arkham Asylum-developer Rocksteady Studios. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but both sides seems pretty excited about the new arrangement:

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group announced today the acquisition of a majority stake in Rocksteady Studios, a privately held developer of interactive entertainment targeted at teens and adults, continuing Warner Bros.’ pattern as one of the industry’s fastest growing games publishers.

“Rocksteady demonstrated its professionalism and extraordinary development abilities with Batman: Arkham Asylum,” said Kevin Tsujihara, president, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. “This arrangement is a great strategic fit and we are very pleased to solidify our relationship with this talented development team.”

Founded in 2004 in London, England, Rocksteady specializes in developing action-adventure video games, including Batman: Arkham Asylum, one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2009. The title has enjoyed robust sales, shipping over thre224ee million units worldwide, and has garnered numerous industry awards.

“We are proud to strengthen our association with WBIE, a world class publisher that we have enjoyed working with since we began developing Batman: Arkham Asylum,” said Jamie Walker, studio director, Rocksteady Studios. Sefton Hill, games director, added, “The Rocksteady team is very much looking forward to creating more great games based on widely recognized Warner Bros. brands like Batman.”

Warner Bros. continues to grow its games business through key acquisitions, building internal development capabilities, leveraging its global video distribution infrastructure, and focusing on developing major games franchises such as Batman, Mortal Kombat, The Lord of the Rings and LEGO.

“With the successful release of Batman: Arkham Asylum, a franchise that is a key focus for Warner Bros., Rocksteady has proven that they have the expertise to create hit games with mass appeal,” said Martin Tremblay, president, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “We are currently working with Rocksteady on the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum and look forward to bringing the continuation of the franchise to fans worldwide.”

“We are delighted to be deepening our relationship with London-based Rocksteady Studios, one of the UK's most respected games developers and 2009 recipient of the VGA’s coveted ‘studio of the year’ award,” said Josh Berger, president and managing director, Warner Bros. UK. “Rocksteady clearly has the talent, expertise and technology to make great games and we are fortunate to continue working closely with them as we further expand our games portfolio.”

In 2007, Warner Bros. acquired TT Games, developer of the hit LEGO-based game franchises, including LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones and LEGO Batman, which have wide appeal with players of all ages. In early 2009, Warner Bros. acquired Snowblind Studios to develop its The Lord of the Rings games franchise, with the first title expected to be released in 2011. Most recently, Warner Bros. purchased the primary assets of Midway Games. Midway published the Mortal Kombat franchise, which has sold over 26 million units worldwide, and owned a robust IP catalog and broadly applicable game engine technology. As part of the transaction, Warner Bros. acquired two talented development studios to focus on the Mortal Kombat franchise as well as other key properties.

Can't wait for the Arkham Asylum sequel! :)

Metro 2033 shipping with Steamworks on PC

Like Modern Warfare 2 and many games before it, 4a's post-apocalyptic FPS will be bundled with Steamworks on PC. Good news for Steam fans; terrible news for those that hate online authentication and requisite clients.

The decision, we expect, will draw the ire of competing digital distribution services yet again, as it did with Modern Warfare 2. Impulse, Direct2Drive, and GamersGate are the big ones, none of which is currently selling the Infinity Ward game, so as to not promote the competition.

Among the Steamworks features supported in Metro 2033 will be auto-updating, achievements, and in-game DLC.

Telltale Games offering complete Strong Bad series on PC for $10

Here's something worth wailing "Trogdor!" for: Telltale Games is offering the complete PC version of Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People for a scant $10 until the end of February.

Fans of the popular Homestar Runner web cartoons follow the titular luchador Strong Bad in a point-and-click style adventure game to deal with his many off-beat predicaments. The series comes to a head when Strong Bad must defeat Trogdor the Burninator himself while preventing the real world and the video game world melding together.

SBCG4AP's system requirements are on the low end of things so unless you somehow don't have a video card with at least 32MB of memory and a processor running at 1.5 GHz, you can run the game on any PC made in the last few years or so. Telltale also offers a service to send your game on disc for the cost of shipping if you'd prefer to have some physical media on hand.

No LAN, dedicated servers for Command & Conquer 4

No LAN, dedicated servers for Command & Conquer 4

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but another PC title is getting the dedicated server chop; LAN play is gone too.

Lead designer Sam bass said the decision is the same reason they're requiring you to be online for single player, that is, the global player progression system. This feature, he says, is "across single-player, multiplayer and skirmish and all the information is stored in a server. So if you go to another machine -- friend’s house, Internet caf -- whatever, you can login with your profile and all the stuff you’ve unlocked is accessible to you there. It all lives on a server so you can’t really do dedicated servers with that."

We'd take the optimized play dedicated servers bring over cloud data any day, but it appears EA LA have a bit of a control issue going on -- such is life.

Games like StarCraft II and Modern Warfare 2 have been taking some heat for not offering these advantages (two major strengths of the platform), though the former is expected to sell huge anyway, while the latter already has. Given the majority of today's PC gamers seem to not mind, we expect these features will see less and less frequent implementation as time goes on.

Nexon wants to acquaint you with Dungeon Fighter Online weapons

Nexon wants to acquaint you with Dungeon Fighter Online weapons

One's a major defining factor in many beat-'em-up games? Weapons. Big ones.

And really big weapons are something Dungeon Fighter Online doesn't lack, which Nexon wants you to remember well. As such, they've compiled gameplay samples from all classes using a variety of different weapons.

The Fighter, for example, uses melee glove-weapons, with the exception of her tonfas. The little Mage sports all sorts of staves; the Priest likes big honkin' pillar-like weapons beyond his trademark cross. Hey, you get the idea.

In addition to the gameplay video, there are a series of screenshots for you guys to show your friends while bugging them to sign up.

Slayer

Bludgeon Weapons (Average Speed, Long Reach): Dull weapons good for cracking skulls but not so good for complicated attack techniques. There are more appropriate weapons for higher-level players.

Nexon wants to acquaint you with Dungeon Fighter Online weapons

Katanas (Fast Speed, Short Reach): Asura and Soul Benders will prefer a katana and Berserkers can also use one to great effect. Keep close to foes to really show off the speed of this blade.

Short Swords (Average Speed, Very Short Reach): The Asura subclass uses this weapon best. Players must get really close to an opponent but will like the damage.

Zanbatos (Slow Speed, Very Long Reach): Berserkers and Blade Masters dig these powerful swords. There’s a lot of power and reach but be sure to have a sure shot or else players could get caught swinging when an opponent comes up from behind.

Beam Sword (Very Fast Speed, Short Reach): Only Blade Masters can use these special weapons, which dish out a healthy heaping of dizzying lights to confuse enemies before delivering the final blow.

Fighter

Knuckles (Very Fast Speed, Short Reach): Nen Masters love these handy weapons, which are great for getting out of a tight spot quickly and creating some distance for a Nen attack.

Tonfas (Fast Speed, Average Reach): The weapon of choice for Brawlers, these do a lot of damage en masse, making them great for taking out whole throngs of foes.

Gauntlets (Slow Speed, Very Short Reach): This is pretty much an early level weapon. They are slow and can’t really hit far but are still better than bare fists.
Boxing Gloves (Very Fast Speed, Very Short Reach): Strikers are the only subclass which will equip with this weapon. These babies pack quite a punch and in a flurry.

Gunner

Autoguns (Very Fast Speed, Short Reach): The Mechanic and Spitfire subclasses get their kicks with these rapid fire weapons but make sure the bullets will reach the opposition.

Nexon wants to acquaint you with Dungeon Fighter Online weapons

Muskets (Slow Speed, Very Long Reach): Spitfires use these as alternate weapons when a monster is far away. If players miss, it leaves them open for a counterattack.

Hand Cannons (Very Slow Speed, Very Short Reach): Any Gunner can use this weapon but the Launcher subclass specializes with it. When power is all that’s needed, Hand Cannons never fail.

Revolvers (Fast Speed, Average Reach): Rangers use these side arms best – and they pack some serious heat.

Bow Guns (Fast Speed, Average Reach): These are great all-purpose death machines and Spitfires know how to use them better than most.

Mage

Staves (Very Slow Speed, Average Reach): No Elementalist is complete with a staff in her hand to beat back the evil hordes. Battle Mages and Witches might want to find something with a little more kick.

Poles (Fast Speed, Average Reach): Heavy, hard and painful, poles are the perfect accessory for the Battle Mage subclass.

Spears (Slow Speed, Long Reach): Battle Mages can also wield a dangerous Spear and it’s great as a starter instrument of pain for the fledgling Mage. Nail those beasts from a little farther away to still get in those special magic attacks.

Rods (Very Fast Speed, Short Reach): Both the Elementalist and Summoner subclasses can get a lot of use out of a Rod. It is also a great beginner tool of death for any Mage.

Broomsticks (Fast Speed, Average Reach): Of course, only Witches can use these weapons and they can do so much more than just attacking monsters. With the right skills, a Witch can take to the air with her trusty Broomstick.

Priest

Battle Axes (Very Slow Speed, Long Reach): This weapon is a favorite of the Exorcist subclass and all Priests can cause a lot of carnage with these trusty double blades.

Nexon wants to acquaint you with Dungeon Fighter Online weapons

Totems (Average Speed, Average Reach): Monks squeeze the most power out of Totems, which are a good way to attack nearly every monster in the land of Arad.

Crosses (Average Speed, Average Reach): The Crusader subclass covets this weapon more than any other instrument. That doesn’t mean these big bad avatars of the almighty can’t dish out damage in the hands of every holy man. Every Priest should keep at least one in the arsenal.

Rosaries (Slow Speed, Very Short Reach): The Exorcist can channel divine power into these beads so as to harness the holy power of the heavens. Or just beat monsters over the head with these giant beads.

Scythes (Fast Speed, Long Reach): Most Priests find this weapon extremely useful but Crusaders avoid it.

EVE Online Tyrannis Announced

EVE Online Tyrannis Announced

CCP has announced the next EVE Online expansion, Tyrannis . Development is underway and has moved from planning into implementation. There is no release date yet, but should it follow the usual EVE expansion cycle, expect to see it sometime in the Summer or early Autumn 2010. Tyrannis is going to revolve around the planets of EVE Online.

Until now, Planets have been little more than some pretty background visuals in EVE as gameplay elements have concentrated on stations, stargates and the control of moons that are the sole source of raw materials for Tech 2 production. Recent Dominion expansion gave the planets a massive visual overhaul,210c but they are still mostly background set pieces, with very little gameplay attached to them. This is about to change.

In our upcoming expansion, Tyrannis, ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS.

That‘s right, you will finally be able to survey for juicy deposits of minerals and other goodies, build infrastructure to harvest them, store them, process them and launch them into space. Build complex networks of facilities and fine tune them for optimal production. All in a very massive single shard sandboxy way as only EVE can provide. And it‘s not just the terran planets. It‘s ALL OF THEM. The gas giants, the lava planets, the ice worlds, the water worlds and even the elusive plasma planets. Each type with their unique properties. Maintaining facilities on gruesomely hostile planets will be tougher and more demanding, but the rewards may be so much more "onturning."

Very little detail yet, but this fits straight into the picture painted by CCP's upcoming console-based persistent online shooter, DUST 514, which is supposed to tie into EVE Online planetary conquest, linking EVE players on the PC and DUST players on the consoles to the same persistent universe.

However, there may be a lot more to Tyrannis than is being revealed here - to make planets worth something in the game, they would have to tie in to the massively complex economy of EVE in some way. I mean, when Apocrypha added wormholes and new Sleeper NPC faction, it also added Tech 3 ships and all the materials used for those production chains as the carrot to go to wormhole space. Same would have to somehow apply to planets to make people want to take them over and fight over the control of them. Interesting times ahead.

Dedicated servers coming to Aliens Vs. Predator PC

Dedicated servers coming to Aliens Vs. Predator PC

The whole "dedicated server" ballyhoo has brought the PC gaming community into an uproar with developers opting for internet matchmaking to release their games out faster. Aliens Vs. Predator has matchmaking out of the box but developer Rebellion appears to have a change in plans for AVP as they are rolling out dedicated server support for the PC version very soon.

Over at the Steam forums, a representative from Rebellion has confirmed a beta release with reduced functionality will be available in a few days. Added features and the usual assortment of bug fixes will be released over the next few weeks. If you're interested in running a server, it will be under the "Tools" tab in the Steam client as a free download.

Those who wish to keep tabs on further developments are urged to keep an eye on the thread at the Steam forums (provided in the source link). In the meantime, you could finish up the single-player campaign or try your luck with the current matchmaking feature.

Ubisoft's new DRM clarified, requires constant net connection

Ubisofts new DRM clarified, requires constant net connection

No, this isn't subversive...

Detailing Ubisoft's new DRM scheme for PC games last month, we'd been left with the impression from the official FAQ that should you be disconnected from Ubi.com in-game (required for play), you could resume offline. The company has now clarified this is not the case, so in short, yes, you will need a very much dedicated Internet connection to play most or all Ubisoft titles on the PC for the forseeable future.

"As long as you do not quit the game, the game will continue to try to reconnect for an unlimited time. Once the game is able to reconnect, you will immediately be returned to your game," an Ubisoft representative stated.

In addition to that, some titles will see you lose your progress should your connection drop mid-game, like Assassin's Creed II, which puts you back at the last checkpoint (yes, there are checkpoints) once you reconnect. Settlers 7 puts you back at the exact point you were at beforehand.

Granted, it's said this will only occur if the disconnection is "lengthy" -- a second or two won't cause any holdups. That and a slow connection is claimed to not make any trouble either. The rep said, "Our online services platform will require a maximum of 50kbps of available bandwidth, so even with the slowest connection, gameplay won’t be affected."

Given EA and BioWare have seen big success with a customer-friendly model on Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 (essentially no DRM, but rather, redeemable DLC for legit owners), we have to say this is nothing but a headache. Even dreadful models like periodic online authentication seem like nothing in comparison.

Developers are opposing it, too; Tropico 3 studio Haemimont Games' Ivan-Assen Ivanov said, "I like what Ubisoft is doing for PC games - that way, we and everybody else will look reasonable when we do something slightly less retarded." That about sums it up.
