EVE Online Tyrannis Announced

EVE Online Tyrannis Announced

CCP has announced the next EVE Online expansion, Tyrannis . Development is underway and has moved from planning into implementation. There is no release date yet, but should it follow the usual EVE expansion cycle, expect to see it sometime in the Summer or early Autumn 2010. Tyrannis is going to revolve around the planets of EVE Online.

Until now, Planets have been little more than some pretty background visuals in EVE as gameplay elements have concentrated on stations, stargates and the control of moons that are the sole source of raw materials for Tech 2 production. Recent Dominion expansion gave the planets a massive visual overhaul,210c but they are still mostly background set pieces, with very little gameplay attached to them. This is about to change.

In our upcoming expansion, Tyrannis, ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS.

That‘s right, you will finally be able to survey for juicy deposits of minerals and other goodies, build infrastructure to harvest them, store them, process them and launch them into space. Build complex networks of facilities and fine tune them for optimal production. All in a very massive single shard sandboxy way as only EVE can provide. And it‘s not just the terran planets. It‘s ALL OF THEM. The gas giants, the lava planets, the ice worlds, the water worlds and even the elusive plasma planets. Each type with their unique properties. Maintaining facilities on gruesomely hostile planets will be tougher and more demanding, but the rewards may be so much more "onturning."

Very little detail yet, but this fits straight into the picture painted by CCP's upcoming console-based persistent online shooter, DUST 514, which is supposed to tie into EVE Online planetary conquest, linking EVE players on the PC and DUST players on the consoles to the same persistent universe.

However, there may be a lot more to Tyrannis than is being revealed here - to make planets worth something in the game, they would have to tie in to the massively complex economy of EVE in some way. I mean, when Apocrypha added wormholes and new Sleeper NPC faction, it also added Tech 3 ships and all the materials used for those production chains as the carrot to go to wormhole space. Same would have to somehow apply to planets to make people want to take them over and fight over the control of them. Interesting times ahead.
