Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but another PC title is getting the dedicated server chop; LAN play is gone too.
Lead designer Sam bass said the decision is the same reason they're requiring you to be online for single player, that is, the global player progression system. This feature, he says, is "across single-player, multiplayer and skirmish and all the information is stored in a server. So if you go to another machine -- friend’s house, Internet caf -- whatever, you can login with your profile and all the stuff you’ve unlocked is accessible to you there. It all lives on a server so you can’t really do dedicated servers with that."
We'd take the optimized play dedicated servers bring over cloud data any day, but it appears EA LA have a bit of a control issue going on -- such is life.
Games like StarCraft II and Modern Warfare 2 have been taking some heat for not offering these advantages (two major strengths of the platform), though the former is expected to sell huge anyway, while the latter already has. Given the majority of today's PC gamers seem to not mind, we expect these features will see less and less frequent implementation as time goes on.
