Great as DICE's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is, the game has been suffering from some fairly serious problems (knifing not working properly, hit detection not always great), and a few critical ones (lag, crashes, freezes). On the whole the experience tends to be pretty good, but a patch to fix these issues and others has been eagerly awaited for more than a month now.
After failing QA several times, the patch has finally passed and is expected to roll out next Wednesday, June 23. The one that passed is the EA version -- the Steam version (which requires some special code of its own) still needs to be cleared in time, so it's possible it won't roll out for everyone until Monday, June 28 (holiday, end of the week would push it), though Associate Producer Barrie "Bazajaytee" Tingle says it's "looking good."
It turns out the reason for the patch continually failing testing was related to the SPECACT kits, which are camo gear packs for the various units. As such, these will be cut from the patch. It's definitely one of the highlights, but we can live without if it means a stable and reliable experience. The kits of course will come later -- we assume the next patch, if they figure out the issue by then.
However, players can look forward to Map Pack 3 -- all the details on that are here.
On a related note, CrossFire users may have noticed a performance drop on Bad Company 2 with the new 10.6 drivers -- ATI has confirmed this and will be releasing an application profile to fix it later today. We'll let you know when that and the patch go live.
Update: unfortunately the patch didn't pass Steam's QA -- something to do with mouse sensitivity. This means we'll likely see the patch Monday. Meanwhile, CrossFire users can grab the app profiles from Rage3D -- these will restore performance.
