We've heard Obsidian Entertainment (Alpha Protocol, Fallout: New Vegas) was working on a "big, unannounced project", and it looks like that's Dungeon Siege3, which has just changed hands from Gas Powered Games (Demigod). However, the latter studio's leader Chris Taylor will still be advising the project, which is planned for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC; Square Enix is publishing.
Not familiar with Dungeon Siege? The series has been developed by GPG since its beginning in 2002. Featuring a mix of pause-and-go and tactical RPG gameplay, the titles received mostly good reviews, though mixed reception from the general public.
The story in Dungeon Siege 3 is described as follows:
Torn asunder, the delicate balance of power between the kingdom of Ehb’s powerful factions has fallen apart. As one of the few remaining members of the disgraced protectors of the land, the 10th Legion, it is up to you to rebuild the once great Legion and stop Ehb from falling into darkness. Joined by a group of unique companions, you will travel through the striking land of Ehb defeating all manner of villains and beasts through a combination of heroic abilities, screen shaking magic and fearsome weapons.
Back in 2008, Taylor stated DS3 would be whittled down to a purely single character experience in an effort to simplify the gameplay, to which fans responded Dungeon Siege was far from complex as it was. It sounds like the tides have changed and Obsidian is working toward a more in-depth experience, as their effort will feature co-op multiplayer.
