"Huge design flaws" with Fable II, says Molyneux

Huge design flaws with Fable II, says Molyneux

Whereas the original Fable was very well-received overall, it seems like gamers have more negative things to say about its sequel. Creator Peter Molyneux is on that side of the fence too, speaking openly about game's "huge design flaws" at the Develop Conference in the UK today.

"Fable II, let's be honest about it, it has some terribly messy things about it," he said. "Half of that, again being honest, was because we rushed at the end and we had this terrible phase where, the world looks this beautiful with this many game features, and then slowly transitioned into being less beautiful."

"On Fable II we had, at one point, 67,000 bugs. The Microsoft Test team rated us super black. No-one had been black before. They'd been red and orange and green. But we were super black. They said it's utterly impossible for anybody to come out as super black."

"That's why we had to reduce down what we had. But, to be honest with you, there were also huge design flaws in Fable II."

He continued beyond those issues, stating they failed to deliver on the game's features -- evidently gamers used just 60% of the content, although for an RPG, this doesn't seem so crazy.

Things Molyneux hates about Fable II: the "boring and tedious" map ("no one even knew it was a map"), the female characters (they "all looked like Russian shot putters"), and long load times ("because a lot of our world is persistent, we can't afford the memory").

The former two items will be fixed up in Fable III -- the 2D GUI has been replaced by a "3D space" called "The Sanctuary", and as for the women, they're actually women, complete with "curves and soft bits." If your memory is particularly good, you may recall an editorial from a couple years back by staff writer Lydia Sung who proclaimed "Women are just men with boobs in Fable II" -- so this is good news for superfans like herself, and anyone who appreciates curves and soft bits (read: all sensible gentlemen).

Fable III launches this holiday season. We'll be sure to tell you what we think of the changes.
