American McGee back with Alice: Madness Returns

Madness Returns

Well over a million folks remember American McGee's Alice, a twisted video game spin on the classic Wonderland universe released one decade ago now. Fans and critics alike ate it up, certainly thanks to the brutal storytelling.

Originally announced in 2009, today we get the first real look at McGee's new work, titled Alice: Madness Returns. As you can see from the shots here, the art style is pretty unique, almost "papery" in places, and as vibrant as it is dark -- no easy thing to achieve.

As before, Alice is journeying through Wonderland battling her psyche and past, and will meet a variety of characters in between fighting enemies with deadly weapons. This story takes place ten years after the original, though. After those tragic events, she's been kicking around an asylum the whole time, now finally released and ready to find out the real reason things happened the way they did.

Madness Returns will be published by EA and developed by Spicy Horse Entertainment, who recently worked on American McGee's Grimm, which fared okay. The press conference indicated though a lot of new talent will be onboard from many parts of the world, so hopefully it turns out an inspired work -- it's certainly looking like it so far.

The game launches next year on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
