GameTap offers up PC classic X-Com for free for a week

You may have heard of GameTap -- is a game subscription service, where you a pay flat fee to have access to a bunch of games. As a promotion for the service, they offer a smaller roster of free games. Starting today, PC classic X-Com: UFO Defense is being served up.

Many game journalists would put X-Com up in the top ten all time best PC games ever made. Released way back in 1994, the game was an innovative blend of strategy, and turn-based, squad level combat.

The premise of the game is fairly simple: a covert alien invasion has taken planet Earth by surprise. World governments come together to fund a secret, international organization to counter the alien threat: X-Com.You have to build bases around the planet and take out troublesome aliens. If you are too easy on the gray buggers, they will inflitrate various countries' governments, and you'll lose funding.

The original game has spawned a whole host of sequels and remakes, both fan-made and commercial. The latest and largest incarnation of the game was UFO: Afterlight.

If you can get over the dated graphics and feel adventurous, you might want to check out the game. Unfortunately, however, the game is only free until Febuary 5th, which isn't really enough time to finish the game if you are new to it.
