Electronic Arts (EA) is probably the first name people think of when the topic of sports video games comes up, so it makes some sense they've announced a line of (non-virtual) sports equipment, to debut at retail this autumn.
The company has partnered with Toy Island to make what they call a "unique" line. It ain't just talk, the stuff is said to "bring the excitement of video game simulation outside onto the fields of play", accomplished with infrared, motion and equilibrium sensors.
"Our goal is to take the EA SPORTS brand deeper into the fabric of sports, and into new markets that allow more people to unleash their inner spirit of sports and competition," said EA Sports president Peter Moore. "With Toy Island, we've found a partner that shares EA SPORTS' passion for quality and innovation. We're excited to be working with them to bring to market unique products that are sure to be captivating for young athletes."
This follows Moore's ambitions we heard about in August via MCV, saying they're looking to overtake Nike as "the leading sports brand in the world":
"We need to globalize our business, provide even more opportunities for our customers to interact with us online, knock down the barriers to those who find the learning curve of our games too steep, and discover new areas in sports – and health and wellness – in which our brand can truly make a difference."
Here's what we'll see:
a line of interactive training tools featuring voice commands and instructional coaching elements designed to take budding stars to the next level; a complete game-in-a-box containing all the equipment necessary for kids to practice and play a sport; a line of sports toys that will utilize electronics to reward young athletes with cheers when they use proper techniques; a basic line of high density-foam balls to help kids develop throwing and kicking motor skills at an early age.Sci-fi sports, here we come...
