Publisher bitComposer (Ninja Blade, STALKER: Call of Pripyat) has acquired the rights to the Jagged Alliance name, and will be putting out the next entry -- Jagged Alliance 3 -- as soon as next year. At this stage, it's unclear who will be developing the game; we've contacted bC for comment. For anyone unfamiliar, Jagged Alliance games feature a mix of strategy, tactics and RPG elements, and see you commanding a band of mercenaries.
Like Disciples III: Renaissance, original owner Strategy First has sold the rights to the series, presumably due to financial issues.
Some fans will recall Jagged Alliance 3D and Jagged Alliance 3 have been discussed as early as 2004, under Strategy First and developer MiST Land South, and later, current Disciples III developer Akella, in partnership with F3games. After a series of legal and development complications, the games were eventually dropped.
Nevertheless, fans can still get in on 2007's Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge, a well-received spiritual successor created by Game Factory Interactive (a previous Strategy First partner).
"Recently there has been conflicting information about further planned releases in the Jagged Alliance series," a statement from bitComposer reads. "Apart from a Social Network based game under development by Strategy First, the acquisition of the full IP rights by bitComposer Games will now serve to clarify the situation and will lay the foundations for future development work under the license."
The company says JA3 will "build on the strengths of its famous predecessors and, set against the backdrop of a gripping story, will again deliver the much-loved combo of turn-based strategy gameplay with roleplay elements."
