PCGA reports PC gaming worth $13bn in 2009

PCGA reports PC gaming worth $13bn in 2009

Though analysts have said PC gaming would see a rise starting in 2011, it actually began last year, according to the PC Gaming Alliance's latest report, encompassing all aspects of the industry.

The new numbers see global revenue rising to $13.1 billion, up three percent from 2008's $11bn. Most countries in Europe and North America saw a decline of "only" 10-15% from 2008's record numbers. Sadly much of the overall growth stems from subscription-based games and microtransactions, though not as much as it could've given the lack of new releases in this arena -- anything that cost over $10/mo. saw a decline, as did some older subscription-based games.

PCGA president and Intel director Randy Stude notes subscriptions and microtransactions are what drives PC gaming in Asia, and forsees the trend growing in Europe and North America as time goes on. While some titles in this arena are solid entries in their own right, it sounds like lots of subpar MMOs and virtual items are the future, while more solid single player titles will move to consoles.

Meanwhile, digital distribution has seemingly exploded. Though sources like NPD are still not reporting on digital PC game sales numbers, PCGA says retail sales account for just 20% of sales now, a figure offset by the growth of digital distribution.

"In our surveys of PC gamers in North America and Europe we found that over 70% indicate they have bought a full game online. Furthermore, over 50% indicate that they have bought a virtual item," said DFC Analyst David Cole. "This is very positive because, when done successfully, companies in Asia have found the digital distribution model to be significantly more profitable than the traditional retail boxed goods business."
