XCOM re-imagining in the works from BioShock 2 team

XCOM re-imagining in the works from BioShock 2 team

Is your mind as melted as this guy's?

Surprise! An XCOM "re-imagining" -- appropriately titled XCOM -- is in the works for Xbox 360 and PC. Well, maybe it's not a huge surprise as rumors have been floating for about two years now, but we digress.

BioShock 2 creators 2K Marin will be flexing their strategy design skills some with this new entry in the classic series, centered around aliens, guns, and tactics. However, it may dissapoint you to know XCOM will be a first person shooter. Sure, it'll have the "strategic core", but it's an FPS nonetheless. 2K says in adopting this approach you'll be able to "feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world."

They're also pushing the "suspenseful narrative", which pits you -- an FBI agent -- against the unknown but growing enemy force.

It's not clear at this stage if Irrational Games' Ken Levine (aka world's biggest XCOM fan) will have any involvement -- we've contacted the publisher for comment.

Well hey, if the game fails, there's always the community-made and modded UFO: Extraterrestrials, an XCOM-faithful title.

since Jun 2007 | 2 days 5 hours agoThis game will probably have about as much to do with the first game as the Xcom Interceptor space-shooter game they made.

And I'm like the last dude ever in the universe to complain about graphics, but in that one pre-rendered screen shot above, what's up the sky donuts? Honestly it looks terrible. Has less textures than Lau Chan from Virtua Fighter.

I'm glad they are making this game I guess, but it wasn't the IP that made X-Com one of the best PC games of all time, it was the design of the game. And I doubt they will be using of any of that , so I'm not really all that interested in this game.

The world does not need another sci-fi , kill the aliens fps game. One comes out every month. The world could use more turn based strategy games ... it's just that so few good ones are made that people don't realize it

since Jan 2010 | 2 days 4 hours agoTo bad. The original games were really good. Wish they would follow their predecessor. A good alien hunting strategy would be cool.

since Apr 2006 | 1 day 15 hours agoIt has the potential to rock immensely, we'll just have to wait and see how they work the game. Really looking forward to this, hopefully it'll live up to the expectations of PC Gamers devoted to the old series.

since Sep 2008 | 5 hours 31 mins agoThe FPS deal does put this one on shaky ground. I played the first three X-Com titles to death before they released the exceptionally sketchy space shooter & FPS versions. Hopefully they'll capture some of the feel of the originals rather than slapping X-COM onto a generic alien-blaster.

At the very least, I would like random missions where you can capture aliens and their tech for study and reverse-engineering.
