A 12-year-old boy from the UK blew a big wad of money buying virtual tomatoes, tractors and other what-nots on the Facebook game Farmville, reports the Guardian newspaper.
The boy spend all of his savings, 288, and then jonesed out and took his mom's credit card to spend another 625. This is about $1400 USD in total.
"The first use of my card was on March 14. I discovered it on the 29th and the card was stopped at that point. Any transactions after that date were already in the system, so what I thought was a 427 spend turned into 625 over the next few days," said the mother who chose to remain anonymous. "The total spent is about 905, but the credits are still rolling in. Facebook and [game creator] Zynga will not refund anything as [the son] lives in my house. Facebook has disabled his account and Zynga has unhelpfully suggested I use password protection on computers in the future."
Farmville is an absolutely huge success on Facebook, being at the top of social networking site's game catalog. FarmVille has caused a big gold rush of developers to move to social networking app development, in hopes of coming up with the next money-maker, as the casual game market continues to expand rapidly.
Zygna, the company that makes FarmVille and the other big hit Mafia Wars, has been valued at an amazing 3 billion dollars. Which is amazing.
We aren't that personally familiar with FarmVille, so we can't say just how virtually impressive the boy's garden must have been, after spending that amount of cash on it. It must have really been something else!
