Valve's next game is Defense of the Ancients sequel

Valves next game is Defense of the Ancients sequel

User-driven game Defense of the Ancients is receiving a sequel thanks to a collaboration between Valve and current DotA developer IceFrog. Dota 2 will be the successor to the popular Warcraft III mod.

While Dota 2 will be running on the Source engine, the gameplay will be left almost entirely untouched and the full roster of DotA-Allstars' 100-plus heroes are coming over. Even the items, skills, and upgrade paths stay the same as will the matches be played in single maps.

Source will also be getting a few upgrades to enable some graphical touch-ups and integrate voice chat into the game so you don't need to get a Ventrilo server going. If someone disconnects, an AI will step in to keep the game going; AI will also be available in unranked training matches.

The major features being added are interactive guides and coaching systems to help newer players get used to the game. Newbies will receive help on which items to purchase, getting useful info during matches, and letting veteran players watch what they're doing while helping them out through private chat and voice channels.

Dota 2 will still be heavily community-oriented and there will be rewards given out for helping out others in some way. Anything from writing strategy guides to being rated as a good coach will net you something such as a unique title or unlocking new skins.

Expect Dota 2 to launch in 2011.
