It's a great day for PC gamers of old -- today the acclaimed story-driven RPG Planescape: Torment is released on Good Old Games (GOG.com). Still not acquainted with the site? Well, GOG releases DRM-free digital copies of PC classics, updates them to work on new versions of Windows, packs them with extras, and sells them for $6 or $10.
And if you're not familiar with Planescape, it was developed by the legendary Black Isle Studios and is noted for its radical approach to the genre and story in general -- the focus here is on dialogue and plot, and it's a wild one. You play The Nameless One, a man with no memories who can be resurrected over and over again at the expense of another soul. These souls turn into ghosts that seek revenge on you. Sound good? We think so. And that's just the beginning. But check out the gameplay trailer below to get a proper feel.
Planescape sells for $10 on GOG (versus the $60 or more you'll see on eBay), and comes with the manual, wallpapers, the soundtrack, avatars, over 100 artworks, and a "Chris Avellone and Colin McComb book", which is a novelization of the game's story and dialogue. Avellone, if you don't know him, is currently working on Fallout: New Vegas -- he's one of many former Black Isle employees at Obsidian.
GOG says this is likely the most difficult game to acquire for their catalogue, and was the second most requested game by the community, bested only by System Shock 2.
What are you waiting for? Head to the source to pick it up, and be sure to check out the forums for info on modding and more. Below we've included some screenshots from user Paul_cz, taken after modding. As you can see, it doesn't feel a bit dated.
