Borderlands v1.41 update boosts level cap, brings balance changes

If you're not feeling the challenge after a few playthroughs of Borderlands, the upcoming v1.41 Title Update aims to bring back the difficulty by scaling enemies to your level. This will also apply to the weapons you find so you'll always be on even ground with that Claptrap trying to punch you in the face.

Version 1.41 will also increase the level cap by 8 levels so now everyone will be able to reach Level 58; players who own "The Secret Armory of General Knoxx" cap out even higher at Level 69. Achievement glitches will also be fixed for those who own "Claptrap's New Robot Revolution" DLC.

The Title Update will be available sometime in November 2010 for all platforms.

Fallout Online launching second half of 2012, beta earlier

Fallout Online launching second half of 2012, beta earlier

At long last Interplay has given us a release window for Fallout Online, the MMO being developed by many members of the original games' staff. You can expect the title to launch in the second half of 2012, with a beta at some point as well.

If you're wondering why so little assets have been shown at this point, it's because of the legal battle between Interplay and partial rights owner Bethesda -- president Eric Caen says anything they show will "help Bethesda in their fight."

At this stage, about 90 people are working on the game, so it's certainly not small time. Caen said Interplay is aiming for one million subscribers.

He also commented on Fallout 3 as compared to previous work in the series:

"What I can say is that of course we're playing what Bethesda is doing. We appreciate some portions of it, and we're not necessarily fans of everything. I think they miss a lot of the humour, and the fans seem to agree with that."

"Fallout 3 was a little bit too serious – that's definitely not where we're going. Our Fallout MMOG will be extremely funny. At the same time, an MMOG must be a lot deeper than a standalone game. It's not a shooting game we're making. You can shoot, but it's a very small portion of the game. The game itself is about reconstructing the world."

Finally, Caen hinted at some of the innovations fans can expect from Fallout Online:

"What is unique about our project is how we're trying to get it into many communication systems. This is a big problem for World of Warcraft, because the fantasy universe is not compatible with modern communication systems. It would be odd to receive an SMS from a troll. But in a post-apocalyptic world..."

Tribes Universe Alpha Testing Sign-ups

Spreading the good news today, Hi-Rez Studios have announced that they are now accepting applications to help Alpha Test their upcoming MMO Shooter, Tribes Universe. Alpha testing will begin in early 2011 and the developers are super excited to work with fans:

"We are very proud and humbled to be carrying the banner of the Tribes Franchise," said Stewart Chisam, Executive Producer of Tribes Universe. "Because the game will be focused around huge battles on huge landscapes, we need a solid group of very dedicated testers that can help us from the games' earliest stages to validate the scalability and performance of the game, while also helping tune and refine gameplay. We look forward to starting Alpha testing early next year and will certainly be providing much more information over the coming months."

Deathspank PC supports high res, key mapping, equipment comparator, more

When you heard the announcement action RPG Deathspank was finally coming to PC, you may have wondered if it would be a lazy port or if it'd receive the love and care it deserves, you spoiled jerk. Well breathe easy, because developer Hothead Games has confirmed it's the latter.

Besides the expected high resolution support and proper keyboard and mouse support, this version also packs a load of other features:

controller supportremapping of controls (whatever your weapon of choice is)repository/treasure chest in each town/major areaimproved inventory managementoverhauled UISteam features: cloud saving, achievements, leaderboardsa bunch of other "small refinements and decisions" that improve the experience

But perhaps most importantly of all, there is an "equipment comparison function" so you can much more easily decide which armor or weapon is best to equip based on how it compares to your current equipment -- a truly essential feature for RPG players. Hothead says this should've been included in the console versions in retrospect, but given they were required to support dodgy 480 interlaced TVs, it wasn't really possible. With the higher resolutions here, it's no biggie.

Co-op is still in thanks to the controller support.

As for the sequel, they're working on it, but no details yet.

Deathspank just launched today on Steam, coincidentally enough (ho ho). If our good news has you riveted, you may find your way over there now.

Square Enix wants 10 years of profit from Deus Ex name

Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada has revealed not only is he planning on "reviving" Deus Ex 3, but his company wants to produce profit from the Deus Ex name for the next decade.

Speaking on a related note of the Final Fantasy franchise, he insists they won't be "re-examining" it (sadly), saying it's "always been a bread-earner" for them.

What's interesting is in the same breath he mentions Deus Ex as a "key IP."

BioShock 2 patch, free DLC coming to PC

BioShock 2 patch, free DLC coming to PC

2K recently stated the BioShock 2 DLC "Minerva's Den" and "Protector Trials" would not be coming to PC, however, lucky for fans, they've changed course and resumed development on both, as well as a patch. And as a sweet bonus uncharacteristic of 2K, the "Protector Trials" content will be free to all.

Community manager 2K Elizabeth explains it was all for "technical and timing" reasons:

"In terms of the patch and the Protector Trials, we had a working build but there were bugs in the code that would trigger problems with the game during specific situations, and we were not happy enough with the status of the build to release it for certification with Microsoft. As time moved on, we could not resolve these issues to our standards and so could not release to cert. As with all games, however, the dev cycle must end and patches and updates must conclude so that the team can move on to other projects. We hit that deadline without the content being in a state we were satisfied with, so we did not release it."

She explains because they are community-oriented, after listening to the fans since the initial announcement, they've decided to go back and do it. See -- complaining does work sometimes!

The patch and Protector Trials DLC are expected to hit in December. Minerva's Den, meanwhile, they're not sure on, but it will arrive eventually.

"Often, development is not a smooth and straight forward path," 2K Elizabeth concludes. "We never want to disappoint our gamers and we will always listen to what you have to say and try to do what's right for you and the game. I want to thank all of you not only for your feedback, but also for your patience and understanding."

Bad Company 2 PC update coming soon

Bad Company 2 PC update coming soon

It's been a whopping four months since the last patch for Bad Company 2 on PC. Last we checked in, DICE was investigating the troublesome issue of trying to update the game without forcing players to re-download the last patch on top of the current one -- not fun for anybody, especially with the files approaching 1GB. After all this time, it appears they've come up with a way, and naturally have begun teasing a bit what's to come.

Below is a list of changes already implemented on their end -- note this is a small part of a larger list of changes on the way.

One of the Insignia's requiring an unobtainable Bronze star for the tracer dart – requirement removed.
One of the Insignia's requiring an unobtainable Bronze star for the tracer dart – requirement removed.
Hit registration changes brought over from MOH to BC2; several bugfixes, the clientserver send rates have been increased, some of the hitboxes themselves have been changed. This will increase the accuracy of guns, but will not make much of a difference to the knife.
Removed the blue box behind the chat window.
The 2-second immunity when spawning/being revived can will now be immediately remove either by firing, zooming, or any movement (move, crouch, jump). Merely looking around will not remove the invulnerability. In essence: If a person moves, he is never invulnerable.
3D vision fixed.

The hit reg fix is sure to please many, and the immunity fix seems like a simple and effective solution to a long-running problem.

No specific date is set for the patch, but it's said to be arriving "very soon."

Blizzard takes issue with Valve's DOTA trademark

Blizzard takes issue with Valves DOTA trademark

Valve's going forward with their next game under the DOTAtrademark isn't sitting well with Rob Pardo, VP of game design at Blizzard. He believes the name should stay with the fans as it was made up alongside the community-driven game itself.

Pardo says Valve's decision left him quite flustered since Valve leaves custom content to the player community, not claim it as their own:

"It just seems a really strange move to us that Valve would go off and try to exclusively trademark the term considering it's something that's been freely available to us and everyone in the Warcraft III community up to this point. To us, that means that you're really taking it away from the Blizzard and Warcraft III community and that just doesn't seem the right thing to do."

Blizzard is currently working on a new StarCraft II mod called Blizzard DOTA that may or may not attract Valve's attention. Should Valve object to the use of the term, Pardo assures Blizzard would counter with the fact that Valve has only filed for the name, not actually own it yet.

StarCraft II's mod community has made their fair share of custom games with the SCII editor but Blizzard is also getting to the act as well. What's special about Blizzard's custom creations is that they're parodying other video games.

Aiur Chef
A three-round cooking extravaganza! Aiur Chef takes you to a remote area of the planet Aiur, where aspiring zealot chefs skilled in the arts of cooking and killing compete for the title of Executor Chef.

Left 2 Die
Team up with a friend to fend off a new strain of zerg infestation in this epic co-op take on the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty campaign mission "Outbreak."

NCsoft plans to sell dungeon content for Guild Wars 2

NCsoft plans to sell dungeon content for Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars has always been the free-to-play alternative for many MMOers, though paid content was introduced several years into the game's life cycle. There wasn't too much opposition from players, given the lack of subscription fees.

NCsoft is taking microtransactions to the next level in Guild Wars 2, and this time around, it's more than just cosmetics and extra storage space. The company announced paid content in the form of actual dungeons, in addition to the previously announced Transmutation Stones.

Now before you (or I) freak out, note the game itself will still be subscriptionless, and neither NCsoft nor ArenaNet has revealed any solid details regarding the dungeon DLC. Lead Designer Eric Flannum does promise whatever added content they come up with will be worth the price.

“The thing I would say [about not having a subscription fee] is that we actually have the continued support development model that encourages us to make cooler things than anyone else… If we have to sell you additional content like microtransaction content or anything like that, we have to give you something that you’re going to want to buy. We have to earn your money.

“We don’t get to say oh well, you know ‘We don’t have to release this content this month, since they’re all going to give us their subscription fee anyways. Let’s just wait until next month and release this cool thing.’ We’re actually kind of bound because if we need income, if we need this game to make some money, we better provide things that people want to buy.

“There are not many subscription-fee games that have equaled [what we've put out for the original Guild Wars since Prophecy shipped] so I think our content model ensures that you’re getting your money’s worth, because as the consumer you have the option to say ‘You know, I’m not going to buy that. That’s not good enough.’ Whereas the monthly fee [business model] takes it out of your hand. You better be getting something good every month for that–but that’s just not the case with a lot of games.”

Keep in mind you're still getting a full game with a copy of Guild Wars 2, and the microtransactions discussion applies to additional content. Although the idea has been confirmed, it remains up in the air for the most part.

TF2 Mann-conomy update serves big paychecks for content creators

Team Fortress 2's "Mann-conomy" update has served a substantial payday for those who contributed their items to the game. Five Steam community members were served paychecks ranging from $39,000 to $47,000 just from the first two weeks of sales.

The demand for buying items was surprisingly high considering items were going for as much as $20. Spencer Kern, one of the community content creators, was surprised by the turnout:

"It's astounding that so many people want to purchase the items that came out of the community. The response exceeded my wildest expectations. There really is no doubt at this point that there's a huge demand for community-created content in TF2 and, hopefully, more games will start to tap into this demand."

If you want a shot at making a quick buck just by making an item or two for Team Fortress 2, head over to the Contribute page to see how you can get in.

Section 8: Prejudice Multiplayer Beta Sign-ups

Grabbing our attention this afternoon, TimeGate Studios have announced that they are now accepting applications to beta test their upcoming multiplayer shooter, Section 8: Prejudice. Word is the beta will begin sometime this Fall. Those of you interested in participating can sign up right here. We'll be sure to let you know when they nail down an exact date! :)

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm System Requirements

Blizzard has unveiled the system requirements for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Interestingly these requirements also apply to the base game as of version 4.0.1 and, by proxy, to all previous expansions. The end of days has come to WoW players with GeForce 2 MX cards all across... umm... anybody? In all seriousness, I think all those cards are already at the trash bin and while the new minimums may be an issue to some ancient computers somewhere, chances are such a system was already long overdue for a replacement.

In any case, the new minimum and recommended requirements for World of Warcraft are here.

Minimum System Requirements

Windows System XP/XP64/Vista/Vista64/7 OS (with the latest Service Packs or updates):

Intel Pentium 4 1.3 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1500+1 GB or more of RAMNVIDIA GeForce FX or ATI Radeon 9500 video card or better25.0 GB available HD space4X DVD-ROM drive (Downloadable Installer also available)Broadband Internet connectionKeyboard/mouse

Recommended Specifications

Windows System Vista64/Windows 7 OS:

Dual-core processor, such as the 21b7Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X22 GB RAM256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600 or ATI Radeon™ HD 2600 or betterMulti-button mouse with scroll-wheel

(Source: Blizzard knowledge base)

As usual, you can use the YouGamers Game-o-Meter to see how your system stacks up to these requirements.

Compared to Wrath of the Lich King, the minimums have been bumped up ever so slightly - you now need at least a Shader Model 2.0 card to play, disqualifying GeForce 2/3/4 series cards and all Radeon 7000 and 8000 series cards. It also means some truly ancient Intel Integrated video chipsets are no longer supported. On the recommended side, the CPU is still the same old but the video card requirement has moved up to midrange DX10 hardware and, more importantly, the recommended operating system is now Vista or Windows 7 and, as of 4.0.1 and Cataclysm, this allows the use DirectX 11 API. This seems, at first, a huge jump but it is understandable as there is a clear performance benefit moving from the DX9 mode to DirectX 11 (even on DX10 level hardware - you don't need a DX11 video card to use DirectX 11 API libraries, unlike when moving up from DX9 - DX10 hardware works too, minus some visual effects).

No, this doesn't mean you need Vista or Windows 7 to play World of Warcraft, but it sure is recommended unless you are otherwise playing with old DX9-level hardware. DirectX 11 is clearly catching on and unlike DX10 that mostly just added some visual effects at the cost of performance, there seems to be good performance-related reasons to move to the new API, even with a game like World of Warcraft that has decisively low tech visuals and minimum requirements.

BioShocks Rapture re-created in Minecraft

The Minecraft community impresses once more: a team of fans have re-created the "feel" of the world of BioShock using the Minecraft engine.

It's not an exact replica, but it'll certainly do the job. Notably, some ideas that were scrapped by developer Irrational Games are in here, as well as a new area dubbed the “surface recreation dome.”

The videos below represent roughly two-thirds of the full project.

Blizzard suing StarCraft II hack and cheat creators

Blizzard suing StarCraft II hack and cheat creators

Not content with banning just over 5,000 cheaters from StarCraft II, Blizzard is now going after those who made the hacks and cheating programs in the first place.

Three individuals are being accused of multiple counts of copyright infringement and Blizzard is seeking damages from the sales of the hacks. Blizzard claims all the hacking and cheating cause irreparable harm to StarCraft II and devalue the game:

"By distributing the Hacks to the public, Defendants cause serious harm to the value of StarCraft II. Among other things, Defendants irreparably harm the ability of Blizzard's legitimate customers (i.e. those who purchase and use unmodified games) to enjoy and participate in the competitive online experience. That, in turn, causes users to grow dissatisfied with the game, lose interest in the game, and communicate that dissatisfaction, thereby resulting in lost sales of the game or 'add-on' packs and expansions thereto."

In addition to seeking relief, Blizzard will also demand that the programs be pulled from wherever they're hosted from. A court date has yet to be announced.

Final Fantasy XIV gets free trial extension, major updates soon

Final Fantasy XIV gets free trial extension, major updates soon

Final Fantasy XIV Online is facing a very rough start at the moment and Square Enix wants to make good with the players. To get things going, they'll be extending the free trial period by an additional month to anyone who creates an account by October 25.

As for the game itself, the user interface, enemy distribution, and party balancing are getting overhauled to make questing around more enjoyable. Retainers are still going to be in place but a new search and marking system should make it easier to find the items you need. Server lag will also be addressed by splitting up areas in the overworld to decrease server load.

FFXIV director Nobuaki Komoto also made a statement on how often major updates will be rolled out:

"Allow me to begin by stating that the development team plans to release a version update at a rate of once every three months, of which the large-scale version update currently planned for December will be the first."

Sounds like new content should be expected on a quarterly basis. The above changes will be coming along much sooner though.
