Mass Effect 2 sells 2 million in less than a week

Mass Effect 2 hit North American shelves (and websites) this week, on Tuesday, January 26 -- and the world wept with joy. Okay, maybe just game reviewers. It's not everyday the press gets to play something worthy of universal acclaim.

"Universal acclaim" isn't an exaggeration either, with around 40 perfect scores, and countless more near-perfect -- making ME2 the second highest-rated Xbox 360 title. The gaming community seems to agree with all the praise, as on the fourth day since its North American launch, Mass Effect 2 has sole over 2 million units.

Even mainstream media has been calling it "one of the most influential video game series of all-time." Okay, maybe just MSNBC, but it's certainly rare to see such an outlet even mention a video game unless kiddies and violence were involved.

Now that the weekend is here, Europeans can huddle in front of the television / PC and woo an alien of their choosing.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Xbox demo, PC beta online

Bad Company 2 Xbox demo, PC beta online

Xbox 360 and PC gamers can both now get a taste of DICE's shooter Battlefield: Bad Company 2: a demo is now live on the former, and a beta on the latter.

Oddly enough, the 360 trial will be available for a limited time: from now until February 25. PC players wanting in on the beta will have had to pre-order the game from participating retailers, or acquired a code through "select community channels." Download the client via the source below. PS3 players will receive the demo February 4 in Europe and February 11 in North America.

If you've not yet read up, the demo and beta will both feature the Port Valdez map in a multiplayer setting. In Rush mode, you'll be taking control of many land or air vehicles as the US or Russian forces and engaging in plenty of infantry combat.

Islamist group bans video games in Somalia

Islamist group bans video games in Somalia

Islamist insurgents in Somalia have banned one of the last forms of entertainment in the area: video games. Consoles must be hidden away, and establishments like cyber cafes and arcades have been forced to close their doors.

The Hezb al-Islam group, currently at war with the Somalia's federal government, circulated an announcement for the ban recently, preparing for the ban to take effect Thursday:

"Starting two days after this statement's date of issue, all video game playing centres in the areas under Hezb al-Islam control should be closed and playing video games will be prohibited.

"Video games are designed in such a way that they destroy our social traditions and for that reason, anybody found ignoring this order will be punished and equipment will be confiscated."

With movies and sports already on the blacklist, and satellite TV prohibited in many areas, there is little left for young people to do... for fun, anyway. While the group claims the bans are to preserve culture, locals are certain it is another step toward pushing young men and boys into military service.

"Who knows what else the children are going to do now," said Abdi Moge, an older resident the village of Elashabiyaha. "It's not as if there was proper education for them. The more they are prevented from playing, the more likely they are to join the fighting."

It's unclear how people will be punished for gaming, but individuals caught dancing to traditional tunes have received beatings, and men who trim their beards are arrested. Kids who've been seen playing sports seem to receive less harsh punishments, fortunately.

"We used to watch movies. They were banned. Now the PlayStations we had fun with are also banned. This country is not for young people like me," said 19-year-old Abdirahman Hirsi of Lafole.

Basically, Hezb al-Islam is attempting to bore the locals into fighting.

"They have basically banned everything that is fun, so we feel increasingly bored," one boy said.

Crispy Gamer staff axed for new ad network direction

Crispy Gamer is a relatively small gaming news website, but its members are, or were, a passionate bunch. Word came in late last week from now ex-staffer Kyle Orland that the editorial department and a few engineers had been given the chop. Apparently the board of directors behind the decision wanted to take things in a "gaming focused ad network" direction. Sometime during this process, CEO Chris Heldman resigned in protest.

The motion has been into effect since the news came in. The former staff is to receive two weeks severance pay.

"The suddenness of it all is kind of shocking, but I always knew this was a possibility -- I mean, we were still definitely in 'start-up' territory," Orland told GamePro.

The Crispy Gamer forums have been filled with sadness (and anger) since the knife came down; some describe the site as "their home", and many praise the writing talent of the staff. User MSUSteve said, "What I always loved about Crispy was the interaction with the writers and editors. I felt like I had a relationship not just with a site I loved, but with people I really respected and enjoyed."

Former staffer Gus Mastrapa ends it all off on a high note: "Thanks for all the thoughts, guys. It was readers and friends like MSUSteve and w1ndst0rm that made writing for Crispy such a pleasure. This isn't goodbye. Its see you later. I know you guys already do, but tell your friends: support good writing. The suits certainly aren't gonna do it."

MumboJumbo wins $4.6m lawsuit against PopCap

Casual game maker PopCap Games has lost a lawsuit against its now former distribution partner MumboJumbo, costing the company $4.6 million in damages, on top of attorney fees.

Mumbo had reached an agreement in 2006 with the company to produce, distribute and sell select PopCap games. However, PopCap went behind its partners back, selling and marketing the games on its own, going so far as to "employ a calculated use of false and misleading statements in order to sour that business relationship", as uncovered through internal e-mails.

Mumbo's lawyers noted a key retailer relationship was severed with the company as a result of the actions.

PopCap has been found guilty on fraud, tortious interference and breach of contract.

“The law allows you to do plenty of things to be successful in business,” says attorney Marty Rose of Dallas-based Rose•Walker, who represents MumboJumbo. “However, it does not allow you to commit fraud or interfere with a company’s business relationships. The jury’s verdict is a clear signal that this type of business conduct is not going to be tolerated.”

“We were brought into this case at the last minute,” says attorney Mike Richardson, also of Rose•Walker. “And it is incredibly rewarding to be able to help a client in need.”

“The jury has spoken and demanded that businesses play by the rules,” says Rose•Walker attorney Ross Cunningham.

Phantasy Star Universe servers going kaput

Phantasy Star Universe servers going kaput

Those who played the online Phantasy Star games, particularly since the Dreamcast era are in for a sad day, at least if you're without a 360. As of March 31, the PC and PS2 servers will shut down; support will continue for the 360 games "in full and with regular updates", in addition to "currently unreleased and anticipated content."

Before the shutdown, Sega has one more goodie in store for you: the MAG+ event, set for January 29. Details on the later 360 content will be revealed in the coming weeks and months.

In its final farewell to PC and PS2 players in the Phantasy Star Universe, Sega thanks you kindly:

While we are sad to see the PC/PS2 version of Phantasy Star Universe end, the year 2010 is the 10th anniversary of Phantasy Star Online -- and this server / service closure is helping to pave the way for bigger and better things for the Phantasy Star franchise in the very near future!

Thank you all again for the support and great times together with us here at SEGA playing PSU! We look forward to seeing you again in our new adventures!

Resident Evil 5 reboot gets Excella as playable character

Resident Evil 5 reboot gets Excella as playable character

Remember Excella Gionne? Yeah, she didn't do too much, but Capcom has added her to the new "Mercenaries Reunion" roster as a playable character.

According to Capcom, the CEO of Tricell does have some slick moves up her sleeve (figuratively speaking), and she probably knows how to handle a magnum. We were hoping she could turn into Uroboros, but that may be wishful thinking.

So how about that Jill and Josh? Jill can jump on an enemy's back and break its neck with a nice yank from her power-thighs. Josh, on the other hand, can perform an elbow drop or Paul Walker tackle on injured Majini. Excellent...

Keep an eye out for those two in March.

Bad Company 2 trailers reveal Squad Rush DLC, campaign

Bad Company 2 trailers reveal Squad Rush DLC, campaign

A fresh pair of trailers just arrived for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, one detailing the single player mode, the other giving us another peek into the multiplayer.

First we'll go over Squad Rush mode. This one pits four against four in a one crate/two base infantry only version of the "Rush" mode.

Squad Rush will be DLC, and exclusive for 30 days to North Americans (and invited friends) who pre-order from GameStop. After that, we're assuming it will be free to all. Those outside North America can download it with no special action necessary at launch. You'll also be able to invite any friends in North America. PC gamers won't see any exclusive access functionality; the mode will be freely available to all.

Check Squad Rush in action:

Next is the campaign. Given BC2 launches pretty soon, you'd have thought by now the game is a multiplayer-only experience. This isn't the case, and the first media for the single player mode is here. The footage is pretty solid, although the plot goes with a pretty thin "they're building a terrible weapon; we must stop it" premise.

We're assuming like Modern Warfare 2, much of the resources are going into the multiplayer, which would make sense had the MP-only Battlefield 1943 not launched last year (and to solid reviews, though serious bug reports too).

Anyhow, check the video (be warned there's cussin'):

Mass Effect 2 developer diary discusses customization, bonus missions

Mass Effect 2 developer diary discusses customization, bonus missions

We're off to see the Collectors...

Got a Mass Effect 2 developer diary for you today, sirs. This one covers a variety of areas, including imported save games, the Paragon/Renegade system, and armor customization, among other items.

A highlight is the N7 bonus missions: extra content centering around the universe's elite military class. From what we can tell, these look to liven things up in the sequel -- those who played the original know one of the main flaws was the sheer boredom you'd encounter when exploring planets. Not so in ME2, at least not where there's N7 missions to be had.

In our interview with project director Casey Hudson, we learned BioWare has a "much stronger" plan for DLC support post-launch than it did with Mass Effect; we're guessing N7 missions and others like them will make up some of the content, so there's that to look forward to.

Onto it, then.

Deardiary, Shepherd was a total jerk today...

Postal 2 1409X patch brings major multiplayer, mod overhauls

Postal 2 1409X patch brings major multiplayer, mod overhauls

When we typically get mail from Postal-makers Running With Scissors, it's about sponsoring UFC fighters or "Babes of the Day" and such things. Today is different though: hit shooter Postal 2 is now packing a major patch -- "1409X" -- full of fixes, new content, and a heap of mods all in one convenient download.

1409X has been in development for years by RWS developer Jon Merchant, "mod master" Kamek and various members of the Postal community. The wait should be worth it, given all the goodies to be had, including new game types, three new DeathMatch maps, eight arena maps, and a Snatch map. And for the creative types, there are new Mapper features and Editor functions, which they say makes for "one of the most configurable online games ever."

There are far too many items to list, so check the release documentation (PDF) for all the news. And don't forget Postal 2 was recently released digitally on Good Old Games for $10.

Merchant would like to thank Mod Man Kamek for "making all this possible" and the community. He also gives a shout-out to Mr Downerup and "Rob Myth from the DKT clan."

To download the client side patch users can find the installer for Windows here while the Zip archive for Linux , Mac and Windows (Manual install) is here and the full 1409X dedicated server for Windows is located here.

For gamers who would like to rent a dedicated server to run a POSTAL 2 1409X server, we highly recommend http://artofwarcentral.com/ -- and additional support for running servers is available if needed, via info@gopostal.com.

And don't forget – POSTAL 2 Multiplayer has been free for some time in Windows, Linux and Mac formats, so if you have not done so already, get in on the mad, mad world of POSTAL 2 Multiplayer -- which is, even now, getting a whole new lease on life. Here's where you go:

Windows: http://www.gamershell.com/download_26434.shtml

Linux: http://www.atomicgamer.com/file.php?id=69755

Mac OSX: http://www.atomicgamer.com/file.php?id=69756

NOTE: For Windows only, 1409X is not compatible with Linux servers (sorry!), though Linux users can still install the patch and join Windows servers, as 1409X will work on both dedicated listen (in-game) servers.

For those deprived souls that have not yet played POSTAL 2: Share the Pain in MP, now is the perfect time to get your feet wet, so to speak. There are three main sub communities within the POSTAL Community macroverse, so you are sure to find one that suits your style. There is the more serious Snatch (CTF) Community; the heavily-modded Deathmatch Community, with its crazy, over-the-top weapons, maps and mods, and, finally, the Team Deathmatch Community that sits somewhere in between the other two. Many players have been playing the game a very long time and you are likely to make some new acquaintances along the way.

Aliens vs. Predator developer diary explores heritage

Aliens vs. Predator developer diary explores heritage

Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator is a rare instance in gaming: a full-on remake of an old, classic title, as developed by the original team. The original, released on PC about 10 years ago, was very well-received as a top-tier shooter with horror elements, so we can only hope the new installment manages to capture the magic again, in new form.

Today's video compares and contrasts the two games -- what's new, what's old, and everything in between. For AvP fans, it's a must-watch.

As project lead Tim Jones will tell you in a moment, they're now able to accomplish things merely a dream to them back in '99. We're skeptical this could be the "definitive" version, if only on principle, but Rebellion does display a lot of potential.

Aliens vs Predator is all set to launch next month.

Mass Effect 2 launch trailer gets an "Aw yeahh"

Mass Effect 2 launch trailer gets an Aw yeahh

Sci-fi shooter RPG Mass Effect 2 is going to launch really quite soon, and with that we have the obligatory launch trailer for your viewing.

Like you would, launch trailers typically encompass a bit of everything we've seen so far, and if done well, wrap it all up in a sleek, easily digestable package. That's definitely the case here -- BioWare says it's "described as EPIC & AW YEAH by all smart fans."

While quite enjoyable, we do have to warn that some story details and events and such are touched on in this one, so if you prefer to go in mostly blind so as to keep the mystery, maybe give it a pass.

Mass Effect 2 launches Tuesday.

Gold Edition gets an official trailer

The new Resident Evil 5 bonus missions will be coming in March, with new costumes for Chris and Sheva arriving on February 17 and 18. So what does Capcom do until then? Release more assets!

Well, sort of. It's really just packshots and a cinematic trailer, giving us snippets of the old Chris 'n' Jill duo, plus the new Josh 'n' Jill partnership. See how Josh runs around wearing typical heavy duty S.W.A.T. gear? Jill needs no such protection and is quite safe running around, killing zombies in her uncomfortably tight purple (possibly leather) bodysuit.

Team Fortress 2 content to continue after Engineer update

Team Fortress 2 content to continue after Engineer update

Are you worried that Team Fortress 2 will no longer get content updates once the Engineer gets his new loadout? Fear not: updates will continue as will future content, now in the pipeline.

In a recent interview, software developer and TF2 co-writer Robert Walker confirmed there are some planned updates before and after the Engineer pack's release. Some post-release content will also be based upon community feedback from updates released up until that time. When you've got a fantastic turnout from the recent WAR! update and having the fans continually churn out new custom content of their own on a daily basis, there's little doubt that Valve would stop updating the game but a little affirmation never hurts.

Other features and tweaks that the development team are working on include adjusting the drop rate for items, an item-trading system, a training tool for beginner players to learn how to play Team Fortress 2, a lobby system, and implementing weapons and hats created by the community. For competitive players out there, Mr. Walker would like to hear from you about how TF2 can be better accommodated for leagues and tournament play. If you've got your ideas about that or just for the game in general, you're welcome to submit it through Mr. Walker's e-mail and at the Steam forums.

Activision CEO: "Our Spider-Man games have sucked"

Our Spider-Man games have sucked

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick was unusually forward in a recent interview when discussing quality of development. Turns out they've learned a lot from partner Blizzard and their comittment to this end, and as a result, he seems unafraid to admit they haven't lived up to that as of late, at least with the Spider-Man license.

"Our Spider-Man games have sucked for the last five years," said Kotick. "They are bad games. They were poorly rated because they were bad games. We went away from what is Spider-Man . It's about web-slinging. If you don't do web-slinging, what is the fantasy of Spider-Man ?"

While Kotick is infamous for being upfront about company policy, to our recollection he's never flat-out said any of the company's titles were bad. Even more strangely, some of us actually enjoyed Web of Shadows.

Nevertheless, Activision appears to be taking cues from Electronic Arts here, who've also been confessing their gaming sins these past few years. If it's genuine, and a signal to a new direction for the company, we're all for it.
