Sega details Alpha Protocol DRM in-depth

Sega details Alpha Protocol DRM in-depth

Last month we learned the spy RPG Alpha Protocol on the PC will feature Uniloc DRM, which in short is one-time Internet activation. This weekend Sega was cool enough to go in-depth on its implementation, addressing most if not all concerns gamers have had since the initial story.

Firstly, contrary to what we'd read, the game unfortunately cannot be activated by phone for those without Internet, however it's pretty lenient and you can activate via any other computer with Internet (so, say, your local library's computer).

Those wary of Internet-based activation can rest easy: Sega says it will patching out the DRM in about 18-24 months (as it did with Football Manager 2009) to "alleviate any fears of not being able to play the game when the Uniloc servers won’t be around anymore."

Alpha Protocol can be activated on five PCs at any one time, however you can activate and deactivate to your heart's content, meaning you don't have to worry about hardware swapping or anything else. Even in rare situations where you lose your activations (hardware failure), a straightforward process is in place to help you get it back -- just boot up the game and play as normal, then go through the steps. In short, you don't even have to think about deactivation.

Those who prefer to not have Steamworks attached to their game will be pleased: Sega confirms unlike some of its recent titles, Steamworks will not be used, though the Steam version will still use Uniloc.

Lastly, the disc will not be required in drive.

All told, this is a very reasonable implementation, one we hope more companies follow (this and EA's methods). Especially with that sexy box art, we can wholeheartedly recommend the game at this stage.
