In most RPGs and MMOs, reaching a certain level with your character will eventually give way to more class options. Specs, builds, more skills to unlock depending on which path you choose.
BioWare explains their version of this system, appropriately dubbed "Advanced Class." In Star Wars: The Old Republic, Advanced Classes are "specialized careers" for your character, based on his or her class. Once you read a certain level, s/he can pick between two build types. Think of it as a Force user having to choose between Light and Dark.
These Advanced Classes do, of course, come with unique skills and abilities, exclusive to each class. It's just another way to further customize your character, be it Bounty Hunter, Smuggler, or Jedi. Choosing an Advanced Class doesn't mean the sweet, sweet skills of the other tree are totally closed off to you, however. The third tier Skills are shared between both Advanced Classes of the base class, so there is some freedom there.
Launch day is less than a year away, with a general period set for Spring 2011.
