It's no secret that Electronic Arts and Bioware want to make Star Wars: The Old Republic both the finest franchise and single- and multiplayer RPG experiences yet. When you're EA, projects this big ought to be paired with big budgets (unless you're one of its casual gaming labels, we suppose!) and that's just what The Old Republic is getting.
The Old Republic is receiving the largest budget ever allotted by EA for any of its titles, though the publisher certainly hasn't taken any liberties to reveal just how much dough is being devoted to the upcoming Star Wars MMO. CFO Eric Brown explains that while its current Warhammer MMO retains a place in the publisher's MMO strategy, The Old Republicis sure tobecome its new vanguard in the bid for online gaming supremacy. As a result, a new level of commitment for a franchise with such "broad appeal" was required from both publisher and developer BioWare.
Brown concedes that Star Wars: The Old Republic still doesn't look to be on the release radar until March 2011 at the very earliest, and even then the publisher doesn't want to make any promises it can't keep.
