APB launches in June with unique payment model

At long last, the MMO action game APB (All Points Bulletin) has its launch dates set: June 29 for North America, July 1 in Europe, and July 2 in the UK. If you're new to the title, it's similar to the Grand Theft Auto style of play, with an emphasis on gangs (Enforcers vs. Criminals). APB was "founded" by David Jones, the creator of Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto 1 & 2 and Crackdown.

For those that traditionally avoid MMOs, you may be pleased to know APB has a fair and unique payment model. Firstly, there's the standard $50 retail price, which grants you 50 hours of play -- about the amount you get with your average RPG -- and unlimited time in the social districts customizing, socializing and trading in the marketplace.

After the 50 hours you can top up your account with 20 hours for $7, purchase 30-day unlimited time for $10, or go for two or three months with additional discounts. Lastly (and here's the really sweet part), you can earn game time simply by playing the game and being creative.

"We wanted to provide a simple and flexible way for occasional and core players alike to pay for their play without being financially tethered to the game," said Jones. "The model also provides an opportunity for customers to subsidize their costs by leveraging their talent or market savvy in the 'points' Marketplace. Highly talented players could potentially even play for free in this way."

Pre-orders are now available, with incentives including early access, access to the "Key to the City" demo, upgraded vehicles, special clothing, and "Emotes."
