Square Enix allegedly no longer interested in storylines

Square Enix allegedly no longer interested in storylines

Life isn't all rainbows and unicorn-flavored candy over at Square Enix. In fact, long-time scenario writer Miwa Shoda is a bit peeved at her employers right now.

Shoda has been with Square since 1995 (Squaresoft!) and pens epic tales for big name titles like Legend of Mana, SaGa Frontier, Final Fantasy XII. So what's her beef with Square Enix? Apparently, the company wants her to focus less on actual story, and she expressed her indignation on Twitter.

I've worked all over the place and gained a great deal of valuable experience from all sorts of people, and learned approaches to writing games I would not have been able to do on my own, but the one approach I could never understand is the notion that 'games don't need storylines.

Sounds like she has valid reasoning to be upset. After all, she's a writer, and now someone above her in the corporate hierarchy is telling her to quit trying so hard. Obviously, Shoda doesn't name names or reveal any specifics.

But when I was told that RPGs don't need storylines, I was really shocked. They said players weren't after a storyline, so the bare minimum of events would suffice.

Ouch. Very ouch.

Alien Breed: Impact demo, debut trailer released

Impact demo, debut trailer released

Earlier in the week, we took a first look at Alien Breed: Impact, the soon to come "enhanced" version of last year's Alien Breed: Evolution, the latest isometric shooting installment in the classic series.

Following up on that, today a demo has been released, along with the ability to pre-order -- both on Steam. Having given the demo a shot for you, I'm still not convinced the game has gone from "good to great" as some have been hoping -- it feels more like mediocre to good...maybe. Don't let that get you down though, as it definitely shows potential.

The demo consists of a brief level section in which you wander the halls of a darkened ship blasting a few kinds of aliens with an assault gun, pistol or flamethrower. As promised, there's looting to be had, and with your acquired credits, weapon upgrades too. Unfortunately, at least at this stage, the upgrades seem to be generic across all weapons (faster reloads, rapid fire, etc). The rapid fire upgrade for the assault gun proved satsifying, anyway, giving it that extra punch.

On Veteran difficulty, the brief demo proved far too easy -- Elite felt more like Normal, or at least circa 1990 Normal, by which I mean there's a real chance of dying if you don't watch yourself. Enemies are more aggressive, seem to deal more damage and have more health. On Veteran, they more or less just stand there like fodder.

While it seems it could be easy to write the game off and just go play something else, there was a sequence near the end where you're running across a bridge that proved thrilling, and what I hope the full game is about. So you're running across it, aliens pop out, parts of the bridge explode with some beautiful graphical effects, and the music is pumping. Other parts of the game felt kind of like a generic blastfest, while this felt like an action game, if you get my meaning.

Also worth noting is similar to The Scourge Project, co-op could be where the real fun is, as noted in our review. It's said the levels are specially designed and balanced so you will "definitely have to work together."

Anyway, it's $13.50 to pre-order (slight discount), so give the demo a shot if all this intrigues you. We should have the first review up next week ahead of the June 3 launch, if you're undecided.

Alien Breed: Impact expanding, improving on PS3, PC

Impact expanding, improving on PS3, PC

The first episode of Team17's recent revival of the classic Alien Breed franchise on Xbox LIVE Arcade turned out poorly from the view of some fans and critics, partly due to the broken co-op (or so we hear), and also the lack of "magic" which the originals held. The games, if you're not familiar, focus on atmospheric sci-fi alien shooting, similar to Frozenbyte's excellent Shadowgrounds series.

The studio says its listened to the community and is bringing things up to par with Alien Breed: Impact, an updated and enhanced version of last year's Alien Breed: Evolution, soon to be released on PlayStation Network and also PC via Steam.

Given they've delayed the second episode in favor of fixing the first up, signs are promising it could be what it was meant to. So what's new? A more difficult experience, more individual exploration, more distinct enemy designs, improved co-op, and a "Prologue" campaign -- an "updated and expanded introduction to the world of Alien Breed."

Finally, one of the bigger changes is the addition of upgradeable weapons -- pack in some extra firepower or improve reload times, for example, using cash looted from corpses and lockers. Upgrades are expensive, so you'll have to be careful about what you go with -- this adds quite a bit of depth to an otherwise "arcadey" experience.

Word is Team17 will be moving in the direction of Impact with future installments, so there's that to look forward to.

The game is launching this summer -- we should have a review up next week. In the meantime, have a look at the PC screeenshots below.

Star Wars: The Old Republic to be EA's priciest project yet

The Old Republic to be EAs priciest project yet

It's no secret that Electronic Arts and Bioware want to make Star Wars: The Old Republic both the finest franchise and single- and multiplayer RPG experiences yet. When you're EA, projects this big ought to be paired with big budgets (unless you're one of its casual gaming labels, we suppose!) and that's just what The Old Republic is getting.

The Old Republic is receiving the largest budget ever allotted by EA for any of its titles, though the publisher certainly hasn't taken any liberties to reveal just how much dough is being devoted to the upcoming Star Wars MMO. CFO Eric Brown explains that while its current Warhammer MMO retains a place in the publisher's MMO strategy, The Old Republicis sure tobecome its new vanguard in the bid for online gaming supremacy. As a result, a new level of commitment for a franchise with such "broad appeal" was required from both publisher and developer BioWare.

Brown concedes that Star Wars: The Old Republic still doesn't look to be on the release radar until March 2011 at the very earliest, and even then the publisher doesn't want to make any promises it can't keep.

DRM a "losing battle", says Blizzard

DRM a losing battle, says Blizzard

StarCraft II is finally launching next month, and thankfully, with some reasonable DRM. Though publishers like Ubisoft and -- in one instance -- EA are going for extreme approaches in protecting their PC titles by requiring constant Internet connections, Blizzard co-founder and SC2 executive producer Frank Pearce says this is futile.

"The best approach from our perspective is to make sure that you've got a full-featured platform that people want to play on, where their friends are, where the community is," he says. "That's a battle that we have a chance in."

EA seems to have found great success with this approach, using community features like custom screenshots and stat tracking in games like Dragon Age: Origins and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 -- the platform doesn't necessarily have to be an application or client, it can simply be a website linked with the game. Not only do approaches like this make the experience more rich (potentially across multiple titles), it does seem to make for great sales on the PC.

"If you start talking about DRM and different technologies to try to manage it, it's really a losing battle for us," comments Pearce. "Because the community is always so much larger, and the number of people out there that want to try to counteract that technology, whether it's because they want to pirate the game or just because it's a curiosity for them, is much larger than our development teams. We need our development teams focused on content and cool features, not anti-piracy technology."

If you don't know by now, StarCraft II will require a one-time online activation and of course a registered Battle.net account, which is reasonable enough in this day and age, and a method we're sure most people won't mind given multiplayer is where the series has always found the most action. Still, there are those who prefer single player, and even just for those who play it through once, it's nice to not have to worry.

Of course, Blizzard had unfortunately announced the removal of LAN support to fight piracy, which is a real downer, especially for tournament-goers. Following outcry, the company said they were considering a "pseudo-LAN" solution -- the scenario would involve something like authenticating on Bnet once, then being given LAN "permissions." We'll just have to see what happens come July 27.

Guild Wars 2 gets personal with players

Guild Wars 2 gets personal with players

Most people who play MMOs enjoy the social aspect of online multiplayer, but there's a healthy share of gamers out there who prefer and yearn for a more personal experience. Something along the lines of single-player RPGs, where the entire in-game world is tailored to your character, your tastes, and your decisions. You, you, you.

The talented folks behind Guild Wars 2 know this and are promising to deliver. Lore & Continuity Designer Ree Soesbee introduces some of the ways they've made the next Guild Wars more personal.

"One of the challenges of a massively-multiplayer game is that in being inclusive to a vast number of people, it loses a lot of the personal interaction that makes single-player RPGs so much fun. When you're looking at the games on the store shelf, it seems you have only two options - a game that you can play with your friends, or a game that has a satisfying personal story. The Guild Wars 2 design team believes that a game should have both."

This comes with the challenge of balancing "epic and individual," crafting the overall world lore and storyline while ensuring that the individual experience isn't compromised. As the Elder Dragons awaken and make Tyria very unhappy, your character will be experiencing his or her own storyline.

When starting out, you'll be creating a biography when molding your character, beyond the cosmetic details. The player determines how a character reacts to the ever-changing in-game world, be it making friends or finding a personal cause in the fight against evil. Once you've determined the race and appearance of your character, you can choose his/her backstory, personality, and so on. Some defining traits may be discovered later during early quest lines, and in any case, NPCs react accordingly to your personality.

You can spend as much time as you like on creating a hero, and there's a "random selection" option for the impatient. Each player gets a personalized home within their character's racial capitol city, which is created based on the character's nature and background.

Bottom line is to prevent players from simply fading into MMO-anonimity, and Soesbee is just as excited as the rest of us.

Guild Wars 2 tells the tale of the rise of the Elder Dragons of Tyria, the last chance for all nations to come together to save their world - but most importantly, it is the story of YOU, the player within that world, and the heroic adventures and tales you experience in this amazingly expansive world. Our philosophy is that the player is the most important part of the game. ArenaNet is bringing to life a massive world of events, storylines, and characters - all we need is you. So now I just have to ask you one thing...

What is your story?

Guild Wars 2 is expected to release some time in 2011. Get pumped.

Napoleon: Total War - The Peninsular Campaign Announced

Creating a little buzz this afternoon, SEGA has officially announced the development of Napoleon: Total War - The Peninsular Campaign, an expansion pack for their hit Strategy title. Due out in Summer 2010, this expansion will include a brand new campaign, along with a new playable faction (Spain), three new agents and a host of new multiplayer features. Here's the scoop:

SAN FRANCISCO (May 25th, 2010) – SEGA® of America, Inc., today announced that Napoleon: Total War – The Peninsular Campaign will be available for PC exclusively via Steam™ in Summer 2010. This expansion pack includes a brand new campaign map featuring 32 controllable regions divided amongst 4 different factions. In addition to 22a3France and Britain, Spain has now been added as a playable faction for this campaign for the first time in Napoleon: Total War,

As well as the new campaign, The Peninsular Campaign also features three new agents; the priest for Spain and Portugal, the provocateur for Britain and France, and one unique agent for the Spanish faction - the Guerrillero, as well as a host of new multiplayer features.

For a full list of features in The Peninsular Campaign, please visit www.totalwar.com.

It is 1811 and the war in the Spanish Peninsula has been raging for over two years with mixed fortunes and heavy casualties for both sides. Napoleon’s Armée d'Espagne, led by Marshal Masséna, has invaded Portugal once again, but thus far, the network of entrenchments has proved impossible for the French to successfully assail. Although forced back to the edges of their Peninsula by France and the traitors who helped them, Spain is not yet out of the fight. The Supreme Central Junta and its successor, the Supreme Regency, authorized the forming of local bands to fight guerrilla - the “little war” - against the invaders.

The company will be stepping things up again very soon, releasing digital PC versions of classic titles like Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin, Comix Zone, and Vectorman (the first batch), and also Altered Beast, Crack Down, Gain Ground, Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi, Sonic 3D Blast, and Space Harrier II.

Each will go for $2.99 a pop, and be available on various digital distribution networks including Steam as of June 1. Hm, our personal favourite Good Old Games has been trying to secure a major publisher deal by summer...

Nobody doesn't like screenshots, so here are a few for the upcoming Bad Company 2 "Onslaught Mode." With the premium DLC comes new maps, a new squad mode, new missions, and so many other new things.

Still no word on how much "premium" means, but we're thinking of a price tag well below $15. The DLC has already been confirmed for both PS3 and Xbox 360, while most everyone assumes it'll come to PC as well.

Battlefield: A Love Story

A Love Story

Love is a strange beast, friends, and as you'll see from this tale, she can find you in the strangest of places.

Battlefield fan and user "tWiSteD" has relayed his endearing story on the official Battlefield: Bad Company 2 forum. He tells it better than we ever could, so have a read (we've cleaned up the grammar for your sake):

Well I just want to tell everyone my story. One day I was playing Bad Company 1 when this girl (just a girl) mortared me and then she shot me a few times. So then I was on a mission to get her dog tags and at the last minute I did, but it was no easy task, mind you.

Anyway, I proceeded to send her a friend request and she accepted, but she had no mic, so [after] a month of messaging each other back and forth she gets a mic, and then I heard the most beautiful angelical voice ever to grace my ears, followed by a picture of said angelical voice, and WOW this girl is drop dead gorgeous.

To make a long story short, we have been playing BFBC1 and BFBC2 for nearly one year and now she's my girl and we're about to meet for the first time. In about two weeks she's coming to San Antonio, Texas and she's from the Netherlands. She's a pretty dutch princess.

You see, LOVE can happen on the BATTLEFIELD

A Love Story

It's tWiSteD's hope someone at EA or DICE can find it in their hearts to help pay for the trip. Don't know about that, but best of luck with your new love, fella. He says he'll tell us all how it goes afterward, so expect a part two.

The young lady in the story -- "Pr3CiOuS" -- is just as excited:

Wow my boyfriend is so sweet. I'm the girl from the story. xD And I can't wait to see my boyfriend for real; finally it's going to happen!!!! After almost a year, talking every single day lol. Never expected this would happen, to meet MY GUY, at the other side of the world, but I'm so happy it did, like it was meant to be... Thanks for all the nice messages!

Meanwhile user "dietkirk" has some interesting ideas for the wedding:

The wedding cake should be destruction 2.0 and need to be C4'd into slices for the guests.

The Conquest horn can sound instead of the church bells after the ceremony, where of course a snow ghillie wookie will give the blessing with the words 'with these smiley faced grenade (congregation shouts 'GRENADE') pins I thee wed'

At this point, you probably know us well enough to have an idea of what to expect next.

“Rapture Metro Pack” available now for BioShock 2‘A Nightmare On Elm Street’ Slashes Box-Office Competition

BioWare planning "bunch of" DLC between Mass Effect 2 and 3

BioWare planning bunch of DLC between Mass Effect 2 and 3

Downloadable content is the hot topic of this gaming generation, as companies realize how damn marketable and profitable DLC can be. Activision has, perhaps, caused the greatest stir with their $15 map pack, and Capcom comes in close with the Resident Evil 5multiplayer mode debacle, which centered around the argument that their paid DLC was already on disc.

Yet BioWare and EA are not afraid to reveal their plans for Mass Effect DLC. So far, Mass Effect 2's "Stolen Memory" add-on is the only paid DLC to advance the game's story in some way. Just this month, the "Overlord" DLC was announced and promises to provide more solid story-driven content. Both packs are priced at $7.00 USD.

And now, Mass Effect lead producer Casey Hudson has confirmed that upcoming DLC will bridge the gap between Mass Effect 2 and 3. Probably still better than having a spin-off on iPhone or some other handheld, but enough people are likely getting wound up over BioWare's plans to "stream" the series.

"We have a bunch of packs that are in the works right now. So, for the time being there's going to be a continued stream of DLC for people. We'll start to have packs that'll tell the story between Mass Effect 2 and 3. But beyond that we kind of have to see how people are responding to what we have and go from there."

The third game is already in development, but no one is willing to say anything about it just yet. Luckily, chances of getting an update at E3 are pretty high.

Top Gun returning on Mac, PSN, PC

Top Gun returning on Mac, PSN, PC

Though to our knowledge there's no Top Gun film remake coming out anytime soon (thankfully), Paramount has decided to commission a video game reboot of sorts, following the success of previous installments, particularly the 1987 game for PC, Commodre 64, ZX Spectrum and NES (don't know about you, but I've got fond memories of playing that one with flight chair and joystick).

The game -- set for release on Mac, PSN and PC -- follows the plot of the film, of course, but expands beyond, courtesy of original screenwriter Jack Epps, Jr. If you're still not confident: doublesix are developing, the folks behind Geometry Wars, Burn Zombie Burn! and other well-received independent titles.

On the gameplay front, Top Gun will feature "large-scale" dogfights, five multiplayer modes -- Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Top Gun, Bombing Run and Capture the Flag -- accommodating sixteen players, and unlockable planes.

Top Gun will launch this summer.

GameStop offering bonus playable character for AC Brotherhood

GameStop offering bonus playable character for AC Brotherhood

Checked the GameStop page yet? Looks like Assassin's Creed Brotherhood pre-orders are open for all, and the exclusive pre-order incentive from GameStop is a bonus playable character named "Harlequin."

If you think clowns are scary, check this guy out -- he's old school horror. The description for our smiling murderer is pretty much what you'd expect:

Reserve Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and receive the GameStop exclusive multiplayer character, Harlequin. Behind the gaudy costume and twisted smile lies the soul of a merciless Assassin. You call yourself the Harlequin. Your victims will call you a walking nightmare. Available online and in-store while supplies lasts.

Creepy. Not to mention his character art has him dancing while holding sharp, pointy objects. If you don't have the cash to put down now or just hate commitment, Harlequin may just pop up later as paid DLC.

Old Republic "Advanced Classes" offer more play customization

Old Republic Advanced Classes offer more play customization

In most RPGs and MMOs, reaching a certain level with your character will eventually give way to more class options. Specs, builds, more skills to unlock depending on which path you choose.

BioWare explains their version of this system, appropriately dubbed "Advanced Class." In Star Wars: The Old Republic, Advanced Classes are "specialized careers" for your character, based on his or her class. Once you read a certain level, s/he can pick between two build types. Think of it as a Force user having to choose between Light and Dark.

These Advanced Classes do, of course, come with unique skills and abilities, exclusive to each class. It's just another way to further customize your character, be it Bounty Hunter, Smuggler, or Jedi. Choosing an Advanced Class doesn't mean the sweet, sweet skills of the other tree are totally closed off to you, however. The third tier Skills are shared between both Advanced Classes of the base class, so there is some freedom there.

Launch day is less than a year away, with a general period set for Spring 2011.
