Blizzard knew it had a winner in its hands with StarCraft II, and it shouldn't surprise anyone at this point that the launch of the first title in the planned series would be highly successful. The publisher today confirms that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty easily lays claim to the fastest selling PC game yet this year, selling 1.5 million units across all launch territories combined within 48 hours of release. Day one sales were closer to 1 million units. To recap, StarCraft II's global launch on July 27th included "North America, Europe, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau".
"We launched StarCraft II in 11 different languages and on 5 different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead."UK industry sales tracker GFK Chart-Track believes StarCraft II topped the UK lifetime sales of the original 1998 PC game after only five days in the market.
Fans are still hungry for more out of StarCraft II. Interest in actual LAN support for example has not died down, and more impportantly there are still some kinks that need to be ironed out.
