FFXIV PS3 held back by console memory constraints

FFXIV PS3 held back by console memory constraints

Final Fantasy buffs looking forward to braving the whole new world of Final Fantasy XIV will get their chance starting September 30th once Square Enix's latest MMORPG goes live, just as long as the flavor you're looking for is Windows-based PC. Those of you wanting to play FFXIV on the PS3 will need to wait until sometime next March 2011, so it won't be a multiplatform launch.

FFXIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka explained that the primary reason for the PS3 version being held back for so long was the RAM restrictions which still plague current console hardware, on even the Cell-equipped PS3. Most game ready PCs built by enthusiasts are capable of utilizing much more RAM than consoles, so the development team needs to work the extra mile to optimize FFXIV for both platforms; the PS3 version simply needs that much more time to get right. Speaking to VG247 at Gamescom:

"The main reason was the memory... On the PC, they have enormous memory. For PS3, there's a restriction.

"They are adjusting the memory size and customising it; it took longer then we were expecting. But we're really working hard to bring it out as soon as possible."

An Xbox 360 version of FFXIV has not yet been announced, but Square Enix is still working with Microsoft to make something happen. Perhaps the lessons learned in FFXIV's PS3 production will apply equally well to a potential 360 port.
