World of Warcraft expansions always have a hard time getting into China, like in the case of Burning Crusade, in which "questionable content" delayed its overseas release. The content in question included some torture sequence, another problems being the abundant use of skulls and corpses.
Chinese government regulators with the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) and the Ministry of Culture (MOC) initially revoked Chinese online game publisher NetEase's application for BC. The ban was later lived, and NetEase was fined for "gross violations" of regulations. The WoW expansion was also heavily edited (blood changed from red to black, skulls removed from spikes, etc.) to meet these regulations.
Wrath of the Lich King faced similar changes, including character/creature model edits, like changing a bone dragon into a normal one. Chinese WoW gamers will finally be getting the second expansion later this month.
NetEase CEO William Ding reassured the community that Wrath of the Lich King will still be a fantastic expansion, despite whatever changes were made:
" World of Warcraft is one of the most popular online games among Chinese players, and we believe that the new content in Wrath of the Lich King will generate even more excitement. We are fully prepared on all fronts to provide great service and support to all of the new and returning players throughout China, and we look forward to welcoming them to Northrend."
At least this meansthe Chinese WoW players will get Cataclysm too, at least in a few years.

it is articles like this that make me love living in the US.And so it should. People in places like the US, EU, NZ etc. can really feel freedom when we see the shit places like China have to put up with.
Hell, WoTL will be pretty broken in China after the changes. Check 'em out: http://chinagame.178.com/201008/75942001505.html Like, wtf Frost Wyrm reskin. Oh and blood was changed from red to black? How does that even make sense? xD
Oh and I'm preeeeetty sure the torture thing was taken out from the DK starting zone. Makes me wonder what the full list of changes would be like.
Why are people being so anal about everything lately, liek teh article about Mafia II being discriminated towrads Italian Americans, I mean WTF is going on here, and the RE5 controversy, it is set in Africa!!!! people need to start waking up here and seeing there are bigger issues then some stupid video game. But I do not want to get started on this subject :-)
Oh and blood was changed from red to black? How does that even make sense? xDGermany forced that into TF2 and changed the gibs into random party objects.
You can't fault chinese culture. The 'great' places with a market for these games, such as the US, EU, or NZ are all globalised into one western culture. Just because skeletons and red blood are appropriate symbolic images in our western culture doesn't mean that it has to be appropriate in eastern culture. If they don't like it, they don't need to have it, it's that simple. I'm happy that Blizzard are making an effort to create a censored/changed version for the Chinese.

I know for a fact that skeletons are considered sacred in traditional eastern culture. Having said that, I do feel that all world cultures who are even remotely touched by globalisation and the like, are far more open-minded and less 'superstitious', and I'm sure plenty of eastern people don't have a problem with seeing skeletons, dead dragons, etc. Having said that, they're a communist community, so that doesn't necessarily mean that the government actually give a shit about their peoples' interests.
To be honest with you, I think it's a bit of both. Some superstitious fellow in the goverment somewhere mentioned it to some other superstitious fellow, who mentioned it to some other superstitious fellow, and it went on like that I suppose.
Then ban hammer.
