StarCraft II: trilogy and trailers

StarCraft II: trilogy and trailers

Somehow on Neoseeker and GameGrep, a pretty important piece of news slipped through the cracks this past week: StarCraft II is going to be split into three parts. Each separate game will focus on one of the universe's three factions, and will be titled "Terrans: Wings of Liberty", "Zerg: Heart of the Swarm," and "Protoss: Legacy of the Void". I think "Eye of the Swarm" might've been cooler for the Zerg one, but whatcha gonna do.

Blizzard's Rob Pardo said on the topic, quite confusingly: "[The second and third games] will be like expansion packs, but we really want them to feel like standalone products." It is said each will be made in such a way as to justify a full release, especially with more story content and cinematics planned. So basically, it's been a long wait, but you're going to have a whole lot of new StarCraft to play in the coming years.

More than this, each campaign is reported to be very different. For example, the Zerg campaign will have RPG elements, while the Protoss one will feature 'elements of diplomacy', and the Terran episode will give us a Protoss mini-campaign.

Multiplayer will not be affected, though some units will be specific to the campaign mode.

Now, regarding when we'll get all this, the initial release is of course unknown, but Blizzard has said the time between each part is expected to be a year or more; this is why they chose to divide it up in the first place, so as to avoid having to make you wait years and years for the full title, or a game with majorly scaled back campaigns. Diplomacy, indeed!

Below are the latest trailers of the game, straight out of BlizzCon:
