Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch mod goes alpha

Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch mod goes alpha

Remember when we wrote about the Mega Man X RPG? That was lovely, wasn't it? Today we've got another great fan-made Mega Man (MM) treat -- the way these keep coming, Capcom is showing some real unexplored potential in its titles.

The project at hand is Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch, an NES-style multiplayer platform shooter based on the Doom 2 engine which has recently hit the alpha stage. In the game, you'll run about themed arenas, blasting away with your Mega Buster or Robot Master weapon of choice at opponents, all with classic MM-style 3D (!) graphics.

Unfortunately the only playable character is the blue bomber, but perhaps in the future a kind fan or two will mod the game further to allow you to play as Robot Masters, and maybe even receive weapons from downed opponents instead of at random map locations.

There is a lot of classic Mega Man-goodness, though: other features include jumping, damage recoil, weapon energy, E. Tanks, and Rush Coil. Eventually, the creator says all levels and weapons from Mega Man one through six, and possibly even nine will be included -- quite an ambition.

If you're curious to try it out, just head to the source for all you need, but be warned it's very much alpha -- a properly playable version is expected for next year, presumably with a MM-themed UI.
