Editor's note: turns out the man on the box is a real-life USSF officer.
Once upon a time, Medal of Honor was the head honcho when it came to war-themed first person shooters, but nowadays it's a completely different story with a majority of gamers hooked on the likes of Modern Warfare 2 (our review). The last instalment of the series available to a wide-spread of consoles was Airborne, which was branded as mediocre, and was metaphorically trampled by the surprising global success of Call of Duty 4.
With plenty of time to have revised the series, and also to monitor the trends in the gaming market, EA mus be feeling confident as they have announced Medal of Honor, the newest addition to the aging series that is focused on modern conflict. Though details are sparse, one can conclude EA are taking a leaf out of Activision's book, here.
Players will be taking the helm of a Tier 1 operator in Afghanistan who is described as "a relatively unknown entity directly under the National Command Authority who takes on missions no one else can handle." Playing as a total badass could be exactly what is needed to push the rebirth of EA's acclaimed series, hopefully replacing the silent protagonists and lapses in story-telling some gamers have come to hate. EA have also said real-life operators have aided the project since the earliest stages of development.
The publisher is really pushing the "world-class" tagline for Medal of Honor, hand-selecting members from EA Los Angeles (Army of Two) to build the single-player experience, whereas DICE (Battlefield) will be leading the multiplayer component. With such talent behind the project, there isn't much doubt EA's prospect of " an unforgettable entry in the modern shooter genre," will be realised.
The release date is not definite, though it has been dropped into the 2010 window for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
