Prince of Persia movie releasing with LEGO playsets

As many will know, Prince of Persia's movie adaptation is due for release next year, but some may be surprised to hear the release will be accompanied by five LEGO playsets, including Hassassins Hideout, The Ostrich Race, Fight for the Dagger, Quest Against Time, and Battle for Almut.

Apart from shedding light on scenes and locations from the movie, the news also reflects the idea that Prince of Persia is to be made into a more kid-friendly franchise, which could affect the final outcome of the latest video game installment, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. Though it could re-populate the aging series, it may be a direction existing fans disagree with.

WTO denies China rights to restrict Western video games & media

WTO denies China rights to restrict Western video games & media

Back in August, the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled against the Chinese government's attempt to control Western media, allowing U.S. artists and companies to freely distribute content within the country rather than being forced to go through state-controlled entities. Online distribution was also opened up.

China wasn't about to take all this sitting down and promptly filed an appeal in September, citing "moral defense" as the reason. It's an extreme defense, and the WTO is obligated to take a second look when nations start throwing around that term. Basically, the Chinese government insisted that it free distribution of U.S. media -- including video games, music, movies -- would be detrimental to its people's moral health. The United States also tried this argument back in 2005, attempting to ban online gambling.

Now it looks like China can join their economic nemesis on the list of countries that failed the "moral defense" argument. Basically, the People's Republic of China couldn't convince the WTO that these trade restrictions were necessary to protect its public. The Chinese government has a year to respond, or the U.S. could retaliate with its own trade sanctions against China in order to make up for the billions lost on media not allowed into the communist state.

"U.S. companies and workers are at the cutting edge of these industries, and they deserve a full chance to compete under agreed WTO rules," remarked U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk . "We expect China to respond promptly to these findings and bring its measures into compliance."

Only 20 foreign films are currently allowed in China per year, and despite the WTO's ruling, the folks at Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) don't expect that number to change.

Dragon Age comic book #1 coming in March

Dragon Age comic book #1 coming in March

According to IDW Publishing, Dragon Age will be receiving the comic book treatment next year. From March 2010, fans can expect to see monthly issues based on this year's Bioware RPG, set the in grim world of Ferelden. The actual plot behind the series has yet to be fully revealed, though it will be based around rogue mages from the Circle of Magi who "defy the rules of the Templars and change the course of the world forever."

Another note worth taking is on the talent driving the graphic novel. The series will be written by praised novelist Orson Scott Card, with Aaron Johnston (Ender's Game: Mazer in Prison) standing in as his co-writer. The interior art will be worked on by Mark Robinson (Skrull Kill Krew), and "superstar artist" Humberto Ramos will be crafting the covers.

Aside from the upcoming comic book series, further reading can be found in the form of The Stolen Throne, a novel released in March covering the backstory to Dragon Age: Origins (our review).

The 40th Day teaser trailer is hilarious

Well, Army of Two: The 40th Day is coming pretty soon. So in celebration, and as a holiday treat, EA released a new teaser for the game, featuring everyone's favorite bromance duo.

Salem and Rios are plenty good at their jobs, but we're thinking the two-man army business has taken its toll. While waiting for to board a flight at what appears to be LAX, they oversleep. Cue expletives and tripping over luggage.

British Airways has pretty good service though, so we assume they'll make it. If nothing else, these two are damn good at running, so they'll definitely get to their destination in time for January 15.

ArmA II goes DRM-free with 1.05 DLC, bug fix patch

ArmA II goes DRM-free with 1.05 DLC, bug fix patch

ArmA II, while praised as a shooter, is also heavily criticized for its large amount of bugs. When we announced the new patch and DLC last week, reader Honor pointed out it's not much good without appropriate fixes, and as it turns out, that's what we get today.

Version 1.05 not only adds the "Eagle Wing" and "When Diplomacy Fails" content (complete with snazzy Apache helicopter), but adds "major" tweaks to AI and balancing, improves hit detection and damage, many crash fixes and the like, and lastly, removes the DRM (hurrah). It's rare when a publisher "sunsets" a game's protection scheme within a few months of release (or even at all), so hats off to 505 Games and Bohemia here.

The full release notes are below; grab the patch at the source.

Free bonus campaign Eagle Wing
Free bonus helicopter addon AH-64D
New Warfare multiplayer mode When Diplomacy Fails, including 3-sides and support for diplomacy between factions
Major AI tweaking and balancing (better combat cooperation, better situational awareness, new Suppressive fire command)
Significant performance improvements, especially in large cities
Fixed compatibility problems under Windows Vista and Windows 7 x64 with 8 GB and more RAM
Grass now provides concealment also in distance
Improved hit detection and damage system
Improved object visibility and less significant objects popping in distance
Improved mouse input handling
Spatial sound improvements
Automatic launching of user made addons (units, missions etc.) via "pbo" file association with the game
Possibility to switch between windowed and fullscreen mode at any time in game menus using Alt + Enter or through video options
Various crash opportunities fixed
Linux server support added
New GUI to various dedicated server settings
New GUI for multiplayer commands
Enabled commanding during story conversations
FreeTrack support using FreeTrackClient.dll
DRM free
Optional anti-cheat protection

Star Trek Online Outpost trailer enters the Lions den

The latest Star Trek Online trailer touches on some interesting plot details, the first in an ongoing video series. Part one, "Into the Lion's Den," specifically addresses the unpleasant relationship between the Federation and Klingon Empire.

As an officer of the Fed, players will have to deal with all the issues high-ranking individuals must resolve. In the video, we see an research facility, and the crew eventually stumbles upon the body of a Federation geologist. As we wonder why anyone would kill a mere researcher, we get a glimpse of Klingon units, who reply ominously, "Because he was Federation."

The enemy fleet approaching our protagonists' location certainly isn't good news.

Mom calls 911 when boy won't stop gaming

Mom calls 911 when boy wont stop gaming

At 2:30 AM this past Saturday, Boston police responded to a 911 call in Roxbury and were greeted with one of those ridiculous situations you might expect to see on FAIL Blog.

Seems Angela Mejia, an extremely pissed-off 49-year-old mother of four, had gotten into an argument with her 14-year-old son over his love of video games -- some news outlets call it an "obsession." According to Mejia, she woke up in the middle of the night and found him playing Grand Theft Auto (we're not sure which GTA), hours after she'd instructed her son to get to bed.

She promptly stormed into his sleeping area, unplugged the PlayStation, and an argument between mother and son ensued. Like any sensible person, Mejia then dialed 911.

“Sometimes I want to run away, too,” Mejia later sobbed to the media. “I have support from my church, but I’m alone. I want to help my son, but I can’t find a way.”

Her teenage son, on the other hand, doesn't seem to understand what all this fuss is about. The responding officers convinced him to go to bed.

"They were just like, 'Chill out. Go to bed,'" he said.

The boy's mother noted she approved of most games, just not violent ones like GTA. She claims she'd never buy that sort of video game for him, adding, "I called [the police] because if you don’t respect your mother, what are you going to do in your life?"

Lawrence Kutner, author of Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Games and What Parents Can Do, notes that Mejia's frustrations were actually avoidable.

"Adults tend to view video games as isolating experiences," Kutner explained. "Kids view them as social experiences. It’s a way in part - especially for boys - of gaining social acceptance."

As for the rest of you, please keep in mind 911 is an emergency-only service. People who are actually in an emergency (like death) might need it.

Left 4 Dead 2 SDK available for download

Left 4 Dead 2 SDK available for download

Valve has brought Christmas early to the Left 4 Dead 2 modding community: the L4D2 Software Development Kit is now available for download right this moment. If you've been aching to create your own maps and mods, now is your chance to do so.

Some of the more substantial features implemented with the L4D2 SDK include:

Game mode logic - Control map behavior depending on which mode is being used. You can recycle the same map for various modes and reduce file size.Director logic - Map events and layouts can change depending on how "angry" the A.I. director feels based on the performance of the players.Scavenge Mode support - All the requirements needed to make your own Scavenge map. Valve has also kindly provided a tutorial map to show you how things work.

Also coinciding with the release of the SDK is add-on support for Left 4 Dead 2. Players who want to play custom campaigns and mods must download the "Left 4 Dead 2 Add-On Support" from the Tools tab in Steam to access player-made content. Once the add-on module has downloaded, players can begin using any custom campaign including those made for the original Left 4 Dead. Of course, map authors are encouraged to recompile their maps in the new SDK for better compatibility.

As a side note, we earlier reported on the discovery of L4D2 SDK internal files showing support for custom weaponry, Survivors, and Special Infected. A quick trip to the Steam forums features a post by a Valve developer stating additional support for mods will be coming over the next month -- Valve just wanted the authoring tools released as soon as possible.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising "Overwatch" DLC released

Dragon Rising Overwatch DLC released

In keeping with Codemasters' regular schedule for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, some new DLC -- titled "Overwatch" -- has been released today on the Xbox 360, with the PC and PS3 versions to follow "soon."

Straight-off: the 8MB content sells for 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE, and $5 on PSN; PC gamers will get it free.

"Overwatch" brings two new multiplayer modes plus some Fire Team Engagement (FTE) missions to the tactical shooter.

"Blindside" is the first mode on offer, a multiplayer-exclusive in which the PLA must quickly complete objectives while the USMC plays defender in "tense" tactical battles. "Supremacy" sees opposing forces taking up strategic positions with force multipliers like gun emplacements and air strikes.

"Friendly Skies" is the first new FTE. In this, the PLA goes up against US airborne forces with anti-aircraft artillery; it's your job to take out the arms and defend your forces. "Hostile Takeover" brings you to the village of Armudan, now your base. It's from here you'll launch attacks deep into the enemy zone, flush out the PLA, establish a permiter, then get ready for a second assault.

Dragon Rising, sad to say, hasn't been a pleasant experience for many, particularly online, so it's tough to see why Codemasters aren't making fixes a bigger priority. After all, this would certainly sell more DLC in the long run. Nevertheless, the new content does look like a potentially good investment.

The Saboteur PC beta patch now available

Couple weeks back we wrote about the borked PC version of The Saboteur, which was preventing pretty well all ATI users from playing.

Pandemic have tested a patch enough to release it at last today, albeit in beta form. While not as good as a completely certified release, this should get you going in the meantime while you wait.

Grab the patch at the source, and be prepared for the massive disclaimer.

Good Old Games holiday sales discount 170+ PC titles

Good Old Games holiday sales discount 170+ PC titles

Personal favourite digital distribution site Good Old Games (GOG) is currently hosting two lovely holiday specials, the latest of which discounts pretty much the entire 170+ PC game catalogue.

If you're new to GOG, it's a service dedicated to "classic" PC titles, though they're pretty loose with the definition and have some games as new as 2006. Most come with extras like soundtracks, wallpapers and more, are DRM-free, and are made to work with Windows XP and Vista (7 is pending, but most work fine so far).

The first is a Tex Murphy promo. For those new to the series, they're classic point and click detective-style adventures with some great lines, and are regarded as some of the best of their kind. From now until December 24, the first two titles, Martian Memorandum and Mean Streets are completely free. And for those that've already bought the pack, GOG has an "alternate offer" for you. See here for all details.

Next is the big one: all GOG titles excepting the December releases (Myst, Riven, UFO: Aftershock, The Manhole, and Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord) are 25-40% off ($3.59- $7.49) until January 3 -- this includes a grand total of 171 games. They're all stars in our hearts, but check out the attached ones at the top of the article for what we'd list as the highlights. You can head here to cash in.

Here's to a very merry season for gamers everywhere.

OpFlash: Dragon Rising 'Overwatch' DLC Announced

Spicing things up today, Codemasters has announced that they're working on a second DLC pack for their hit tactical shooter, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. Entitled 'Overwatch', this latest DLC will offer two new multiplayer modes, along with new Fire Team Engagement missions. Here's the scoop:

The ‘Overwatch’ DLC extends the unique Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising experience in solo, co-operative and adversarial play. In new multiplayer mode Blindside the PLA must complete objectives in the shortest time possible while the USMC defends21cc in tense, tactical engagements. An additional new mode, Supremacy, tasks opposing forces to occupy strategically vital positions featuring force multipliers like gun emplacements and air strikes.

These new multiplayer modes are complimented by two exhilarating new FTEs. In Friendly Skies, PLA anti-aircraft artillery prevents US airborne reinforcements inserting into the combat zone. Players must remove that threat and then defend the position from a PLA counter attack. In Hostile Takeover, intel reveals enemy movement in the village of Armudan, a perfect base for launching attacks deep into enemy territory. Gamers must flush out the PLA, establish a perimeter and hold their ground against a new enemy assault.

Overwatch hits the Xbox 360 today and will be coming to the PC and PlayStation 3 "soon". To help whet our appetite, the developers have released a short teaser trailer. Check it out:

Command & Conquer 4 video goes over Transport Down mission

Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight co-lead designer Sam Bass has a treat for RTS fans today. The latest trailer is actually a detailed step-by-step walkthrough of the "Transport Down" campaign mission, and Bass is at the controls, schooling us in the basic mechanics while offering a glimpse of what C&C4 will entail.

In "Transport Down," you arrive at an old farmstead, where hostiles promptly greet you. Naturally, hilarity ensues, especially with the Nod show up and start hassling our narrator.

Bass employs various units and tools while explaining what each selection does and how it is best utilized -- all while muttering to himself like a true gamer. Now unless you'd rather wait until March 16 to be properly surprised, check out the video.

Battlefield Heroes reaches 3 million registered players

Battlefield Heroes reaches 3 million registered players

Free online games have proven successful and lucrative for companies, often thanks to the larger "casual" demographic.

EA is just one industry giant getting in on the business, and today they announced that their free-to-play online shooter Battlefield Heroes has hit 3 million registered users. According to the publisher, 50,000 new users join up every week, and the community has accumulated 1,300 years' worth of play time, 300 million kills, and 150 million five-minute rounds. And to make sure their little web-based cash cow stays strong, they've released a new map called "Sunset Showdown."

Sunset Showdown features a single control point, set on a sunset island. Players must use everything they've got to capture the hilltop church control point, including their wits. The sunny side is open for tanks, while smaller, softer units like jeeps and infantry can navigate the east with plenty of cover.

Now that's cheap (yet quality) action; unless you purchase the optional upgrades using Battlefunds.

Mass Effect 2 screenshots preview new interface and aliens

Mass Effect 2 screenshots preview new interface and aliens

Looking at BioWare's long-term support for Mass Effect and Dragon Age, it isn't surprising to hear that Mass Effect 2 will be getting DLC following its release. Producer Adrien Cho would not reveal details in his interview, but that Mass Effect fans will be seeing more add-on in the sequel. Nothing has been set in stone, but Cho mentioned the possibility of "full expansion packs," in addition to smaller updates like armor or weapons:

This goes back to the whole sequel part: during development process of the first game we had so many things to worry about, but for Mass Effect 2 we'd gone through that before and we were like, 'we could've done that better'.

Downloadable content was always on our radar from day one. The team's actually been transitioning some members into creating DLC content already. What I can say is that we're going to be offering a lot more range of content from maybe a weapon, a new gun to new armours, new helmets, side quests up to full expansion packs. So a lot more variety to keep players engaged. For someone who wants a new weapon, they can have one, but I'd want more hours for the Mass Effect universe and those are going to be in the pack.

Cho also noted that it is unlikely this series will ever port over to the PlayStation 3, mostly because the developers are already settled into working with the 360 and simply don't have the time and resources to start altering technology for a different console.

On top of that, new Mass Effect 2 screenshots were released today, showing us what the updated interface will look like, along with a few more alien close-ups: Quarian, Salarian, Vorcha, and Geth. The Illusive Man, voiced by Martin Sheen, also gets a nice glamour shot. January 26 is still weeks away, so get your Shepard-fix here, in the meantime.
