Warhammer Online joins the Mac community

Warhammer Online joins the Mac community

Looks like Mac gamers won't have to stick with WoW for much longer, as an alternative presents itself -- Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. WAR will be arriving for the Mac late next month.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring Warhammer Online and its enthralling Realm vs. Realm combat to the Mac community,” said Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning . “Come October 28th, the sides of Order and Destruction will be bolsters by a fresh recruit of Mac gamers experiencing for the first time exactly what we mean when we say that ‘WAR is everywhere!’”

"War is everywhere" sounds pretty dangerous. If you can't wait until October 28, you might want to consider joining the Mac 10-day beta trial. When the full game is out, gamers can buy it at Gametreeonline.com for $19.95 USD for 30 days' worth of play. Current WAR subscribers will not need to pay extra for the new Mac client.

Gearbox: PC version of Borderlands not just a console port

PC version of Borderlands not just a console port

Gearbox's post-apocalyptic FPS-ARPG Borderlands is coming to town at the end of October. The game will be making an appearance on the PC, Xbox 360, and the PS3. Fans of downloading their game instead of buying it will be happy to hear that the PC version has now been confirmed to be coming to Steam -- so says Gearbox's Twitter.

All too often, when games get simultaneously released for consoles and the PC, the three versions of the game are virtually the same. It is a fairly common thing, for example, to see menus in the PC version of the game instructing you to hit 'B' or 'X' to select something. But Gearbox has made some recent comments outlining features showing a strong PC-focus.

For starters, you'll be able to export any images of your sweet looking gear into a JPG file. So now bragging is easier than ever. Borderlands PC will also have a built-in time demo feature, that can be used for benchmarking -- which is great news, for people like myself, who benchmark video cards. And finally, the game's UI will be designed with the mouse in mind, for PC players. The inventory system should be a little bit easier to navigate with a mouse, instead of console controls.

Borderlands is coming October 20th for the Xbox 360 and PS3, and on the 26th for the PC.

"Virtual Iraq" mod treating post-traumatic war vets

Virtual Iraq mod treating post-traumatic war vets

War is not kind to one's mentality, as many know -- veterans commonly suffer from a particular kind of post-traumatic stress disorder, which can cause them to panic and suffer extreme stress under situations which remind them of war, for example.

Certainly not an easy thing to alleviate, but scientists are making progress thanks to a video game mod based on Pandemic's Full Spectrium Warrior. Entitled Virtual Iraq, it allows the therapist in question to better work with the patient, as they know what's presented to them is a simulation. Going into it with that knowledge, the patient can be slowly comfortable with things that remind them of war -- a certain smell or sound, for example -- in day to day life, or even brought to the point where they no longer do.

The mod itself uses virtual reality goggles and a chair which simulates movement. A two-year open clinical trial of 20 participants funded by the Office of Naval Research and other similar events around the USA have all showed positive results, which will yield more committment from the scientific community. The US Air Force will be conducting its own study next year, for which it is now preparing.

This form of therapy isn't intended to be a replacement for traditional therapy, though; doctors agree it depends on the individual, but most times it likely works best as an enhancement to complement other methods.

BioShock announced for Mac

BioShock announced for Mac

If PC gamers feel left in the cold for all the delays, just imagine how Mac users feel -- a year or two (sometimes more) to wait is not atypical. Nevertheless, the games keep coming, like 2K's masterpiece BioShock, just announced to be arrive on Apple's platform October 7.

Feral Interactive are the company behind it, one of the few working on Mac ports these days. In the past they've put out the likes of Black & White and Colin McRae Rally, so if you've played those you know what kind of quality to expect.

Nothing new is planned for this version, unfortunately, but you can count on it looking as good as ever, judging from the screenshots here.

As for technical specifications, the game will run great on the latest generation of MacBooks as well as the Minis. Here are the details:

Minimum and recommended system requirements

Processor 1.8 GHz 2.4 GHz

RAM 1.5GB 3GB

Graphics 128MB VRAM 512MB VRAM

Mac OS 10.5.8 10.6

Hard Disk 8GB 8GB

Drive DVD DVD

Input Mouse Multi-button mouse

Note BioShock doesn't support Intel GMA integrated chipsets found on older systems, but anything from the GeForce 9400M series on should be golden.

The game is currently available for pre-order for 35 (~$55 USD) at Feral's online shop.

Ninja Blade to hit the PC next month

Ninja Blade to hit the PC next month

ND Games has just announced they're bringing the rather enjoyable Xbox 360 action title Ninja Blade to the PC next month.

This is doubly good news, because -- and correct us if we're mistaken -- this would be the first game wherein you play a ninja on the platform, at least in 3D. Action games aren't too hard to find, but sometimes a gamer just has to get his ninja on, no?

If you're not familiar with the game, it is developed by FromSoftware, Inc. (not to be confused with From Software, who made Demon's Souls), and sees you battling the infected citizens of Tokyo with your ninja arsenal and abilities. The publisher notes the game aims for a cinematic action movie-like experience, so there's that to anticipate.

No specific date beyond October has been announced as of yet but keep a look out. And while you wait, check out the PC screenshots below.

Arkham Asylum 1.1 PC patch available now

Batman: Arkham Asylum has seen the release of its first patch on the PC today: version 1.1. It hasn't been made exactly clear what's included, though according to a couple of file hosting sites, it enables NVIDIA's PhysX technology.

As for any other inclusions, we can't say for sure, but at 270MB, perhaps this includes the "Insane Night" DLC, which itself is 116MB on the Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace. The latest edition of PhysX clocks in at ~40MB, meanwhile, so there's still some room left for more goodies.

In any case, you can download the update on FileFront or GamersHell.

First details revealed on The Witcher 2

First details revealed on The Witcher 2

After some early alpha footage for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings -- sequel to the RPG and probably best-selling PC game of last year -- leaked its way online (we don't care to show it, sorry), developer CD Projekt RED (CDPR) saw fit to compile a FAQ to set things straight.

Aside from reminding us it was alpha footage and lots has changed since (and will continue to), we learn a few interesting details at this early stage.

First, almost the exact same team will be working on the sequel, minus only a few which were dropped during earlier cutbacks, mostly relating to the Rise of the White Wolf fiasco.

Second, the Aurora engine used in the first title will be scrapped in favor of a new engine which CDPR believes is better suited to what they're after, and will allow them to avoid the bottlenecks they encountered during development of the last game. They aren't hesitant to note it's "fully scalable and, well...kicks ass."

As for platforms, the PC is guaranteed of course, and they're also keen to get this one out on consoles as well. Given Rise of the White Wolf (now in development hell) was announced for PS3 and Xbox 360, owners of either console can remain hopeful on those fronts.

Further details and assets will be released for The Witcher 2 as appropriate; as a final note, they say, "Despite the fact that we did not want to publish this video, we’re happy with the huge interest it gained. As always, please let us do everything we can not to disappoint you. Thanks a lot."

Empire: Total War "The Warpath Campaign" expansion revealed

Total War The Warpath Campaign expansion revealed

Creative Assembly's popular and somewhat hardcore PC strategy game Empire: Total War is set to receive an expansion pack. It will be delivered exclusively through Steam.

This one is going to be all about the American Indians. Apparently they are all upset about this whole 'discovery of the New World' thing, or something. Anyways -- there will be five new native American factions now, in the game (the Iroquois, Huron, Plains, Pueblo and Cherokee). This was certainly an interesting point in history -- strategy lovers will no doubt have much to look forward to, leading brave charges against slow moving musket squads, or firing cannonballs at tomahawk-wielding infantry guys, when playing as the other side.

In addition to the new campaign missions and factions, there will also be new units (such as the deadly Mohawk Elite troops, and the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers), new technologies (such as Spirit Medicine and Dreamwalking) and shamans and scouts.

Repel those dangerous Europeans!

This expansion pack is currently selling, as a pre-order, for only $10 --- seems like a good deal to me.

Assassin's Creed II TGS trailer delves deeper

Assassins Creed II TGS trailer delves deeper

Ubisoft has been releasing a steady flow of trailers through the year, and here's another rather revealing video about Ezio and his motivations.

We knew from the beginning his family had been wronged, and Ezio was forced to learn the skills of assassination in order to survive and exact revenge. Well, revenge hardly ever leads to anything good, but it sure makes a convenient plot device.

So the trailer shows us young Ezio getting all sad when he sees his father hanged. Then he skulks back to his home like an Italian Bruce Wayne and dons the assassin's clothes. We also get an eyeful of Ezio's face, which I'm not entirely happy about. Couldn't Ubisoft have settled for chin shots? His entire face would've been a nice reveal to save for the actual game.

Oh well, if you don't mind that sort of thing, I do recommend this trailer. Along with the background, there's more footage of Ezio's brutal kill style.

The Witcher 2 Leaked Trailer FAQ

Following up on the recently-leaked trailer for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, CD Projekt RED has posted a short FAQ to shed some light on what was shown. Topics range from voiceover concerns to the what engine they're using. Here's a little snippet:

2. I don’t like Geralt’s voice. Are those final voiceovers for the game?

After seeing the video many of you worried about the quality of voiceovers and the different voices used by lead characters. We’re proud that our team members can imitate native English actors so well that some people would even consider these VOs being part of the final product :). However, we are not planning to change RED into the world’s first no2166n-native recording studio for English movies and games by using non-native non-actors. Don’t worry, we’ll stay in our day jobs. The voices in the video are not in any way final, and were only created for the purposes of the video. By the way - personally, I don’t like Geralt’s voice in this movie either ;).

For those of you who missed the leaked trailer, here it is:

Zeno Clash goes retail, gold

We heard word of it one month ago, and now it's a little closer to reality -- ACE Team's brawler Zeno Clash is set for retail release in the UK, Scandinavia, and the Benelux next month, with more of Europe to follow "soon after."

No word on a North American release -- last we checked in about it with the developer in March, they'd said, "We're still discussing with interested parties to bring Zeno Clash to retail in other territories, but it's too early to say where." If we hear any update, we'll be sure to let you know, but in the meantime, consider your favourite import shop.

A couple of bonuses are in store for those intent on acquiring this version: all available updates for the game, and a lovely Zeno Clash comic (shown below). Sadly the SDK won't be included on the disc, but no biggie.

It's unclear if any DRM (including Steam) will be inherent to the disc copy, but judging by the company's reaction to pirates, we're guessing not. Update: Unfortunately, our contact at publisher Iceberg Interactive says, "The retail version of the game will only require online activation via Steam."

Anyhow, if first person fighters with a primal and surreal twist or two sounds like your thing, and you just need the box (Neoseeker understands), keep an eye out next month.

China cites "moral defense" and appeals WTO ruling

China cites moral defense and appeals WTO ruling

China has this thing against the free distribution of media, be it movies, video games or music. On August 12, the World Trade Organization (WTO) planted a swift kick to China's face when it ruled that the government must stop forcing US artists and production companies to go through state-controlled distributors. Basically, the WTO told Beijing to lighten up on the restrictions.

In effect, the ruling lifts extra costs and obstructions US and Western movie, music and video game distributors currently face in China; additionally, foreign companies like Apple and Microsoft would be allowed to sell music online within mainland shores.

Great news for Western businesses, but the People's Republic of China is not pleased; it's not going down without a fight either. Today, September 22, China appealed the ruling by invoking the defense of its "public morals." The appeal specifically stated that the WTO "committed errors of law and legal interpretation in concluding that none of the measures are 'necessary' to protect public morals."

When the United States tried to implement this strategy in 2005 in an attempt to ban Internet gambling, the WTO rejected its argument.

"Just like in the US case, China must now prove its trade restrictions are necessary to protect public morals," said Brendan McGivern, a Geneva-based trade lawyer for White & Case LLP. "It will be a difficult argument to make."

The WTO did, however, allow China to keep protecting its two state-owned theatre companies that show censored movies. This has not been appealed by the US or other interested parties.

Best Half-Life 2 mod discovered on YouTube

Ah Half-Life, you've inspired so many amazing mods since your conception. The advent of Garry's Mod has made this pastime more accessible to the gaming community.

Some mods are better than others, obviously. But how exactly do you compare these fan-made nuggets of joy objectively? Who knows, but we have discovered the best Half-Life 2 mod ever... ever.

What, you think we're joking? Here's proof. Not long ago, a Half-Lifefan called "-Trase-" (aka "Patcher" or "Tr45e") has released an awesome mod in which nearly all SFX are replaced by his own voice. In total, -Trase- had dubbed over 1327 sound files.

Here are further details posted by the creator, along with installation instructions:

Replaces almost all the sounds in the game with my voice
(i did not edit any of them, its fresh from the microphone)

What i did NOT replace:
-Ambient noises like wind.
-some zombie voices.
-character voices (it would sound dumb).
-maybe i missed some minor physics like a trap door hidden somewhere in ravenholm and no one ever opens it.
Totally i replaced 1327 sound files.

You can not change/add anything and redistribute without my agree. You can contact me via Steam - RomaZroddomaADMIN
