APB is one game that many people are looking forward to; far different than the regular batch of MMOs you commonly see, APB pits the player in a GTA-like world where cops and criminals battle it out territory, cash, and cars. Lead designer David Jones of early Grand Theft Auto and Crackdown fame is leading the design-helm on this project. But sorry console gamers, this one is strictly PC.
The game is nearing completion; due in March, Codemasters is now accepting beta applications, if you are interested. And now, some of the first gameplay footage of APB in action has surfaced.
Gameplay will take place in instanced zones; you'll be able to rob A.I. players and A.I. owned buildings, but there will then be a 'APB' out on you, so you can expect some player controlled cops to try to bust you. You'll be able to spend your ill-gotten gains (or policeman's pay) on pimping out your character's appearance and vehicle, amongst other things. It seems you'll also be able to collect some different weapons, and your toon will have a few skills to improve and work on.
Although not an incredible amount happens in the following video, it is nonetheless looking to be coming together quite well: the graphics are good and the framerates are solid, as Mark Rein of Epic Games explains in the video.
