ATI CrossFireX DiRT 2 hotfix released

The amount of people playing Codemasters' DiRT 2 on the PC probably isn't huge, and those with an ATI CrossFireX setup even less, but in any case, a fix has been released for those who fall into both camps this week.

Previously the game was not making use of multiple GPU setups at all, but this is now resolved with the new hotfix. So, if you have two or more ATI HD series cards and are running the game, head to the source to fix the poor girl up.

Aion Vision trailer previews next major content update

Aion Vision trailer previews next major content update

It's been barely two months since Aion’s international release and there’s already a glimpse of the next major content update.NCsoft wants to make sure this game is heard loud and clear with an epic trailer featuring the upcoming additions and sieges coming to the young MMO.

Footage from the trailer reveals various visual updates that will add details, realistic lighting effects, and seasons to the various locales players will be questing through.A new underwater zone highlights a highly-welcomed swimming ability for everyone (who currently sink like a rock when in deep water), and players can now lounge about in their own purchaseable homes -- furnishings not included. Mounts will also be introduced, and you can carry mountless buddies as passengers if you're feeling generous.Of course, the meat of the game comes from all the revamped battles. The latter half of the trailer shows off the new gear and spells players can use, including new weapon types such as crossbows and whips. And why stop at traveling mounts when you can have battle mounts as well? Not just any ol’ battle mount either, but dinosaur battle mounts.Dinosaurs, people!

As awesome as that may be, the most epic portion of this preview is at the finale when Aion takes a cue from Shadow of the Colossus; a couple of huge rocky titans are destroying everything in their path and are rapidly approaching a major capital city. The army is out in full force and it’s going to take every single player to help take down each towering dreadnaught.

Now, how about seeing the whole shebang in action?Sit back and enjoy a nine-minute vision of the future:

Moving right along, TimeGate Studios have announced that they've released the first DLC pack for their hit Sci-fi FPS, Section 8. Priced at $7.00 US, the "Seek and Destroy" pack adds three new multiplayer levels to the game. Here's the scoop:

The Seek and Destroy Map Pack expands the Section 8 experience with three new maps for the Multiplayer and Instant Action game modes. Players fight for control of a geothermal energy plant on the salt flats of New Madrid in “Devil’s Backbone” and battle in the narrow confines of a hazardous valley on the planet Titan in “Hornet’s Nest.” “Azure Basin” is set high atop a mountain plateau where a massive hydroelectric dam sits astride the map, with combat ranging both inside and outside of the facility.

New trailer shows Aliens Vs. Predator multiplayer action

New trailer shows Aliens Vs. Predator multiplayer action

The Xbox 360, PS3 and PC are set to see some space-aliens battling out in the upcoming Aliens Vs. Predator, due out in February.

Ahead of the launch, UK-based Rebellion Developments invited some members of the gaming press out to come give the game a go; the three game journos who shared their experiences with the camera in the video below seemed to think it was really keen.

The main selling feature for the FPS is the ability to play as one of three different species for the multiplayer component. Humans rely on heavy weaponry to blow away anything in sight (but are prone to sneak attacks); the Aliens have to really on speed and quick strikes to be succesful, and the Predators have to play as cunning hunters, using their technology to their advantage.

The graphics for the game look nice. Thankfully it doesn't look like gameplay will be limited to dark corridors for this title in the long-running series; you'll be shooting it out over a variety of different terrains.

Mass Effect 2 DRM and system requirements announced

Mass Effect 2 DRM and system requirements announced

Mass Effect fans planning to pick up the sequel on PC can likely shed fears now about whether or not they can play the game: both the digital rights management (DRM) and system requirements have been announced, both of which should please (most) everyone.

Like with Dragon Age: Origins, The Sims 3, The Saboteur, and likely a bunch of other recent EA titles, this one will feature a disk check only. Even more specifically, SecuROM or any other such thing it appears will not be in use. We've been playing Dragon Age ourselves on the PC recently, and we must say it's a relief not to have to worry about limited installations or whether or not we'll be able to play the game at any given time due to online authentication. Definitely, in the case of Mass Effect 2, this is a huge improvement over the first game's DRM, largely criticized by the community, including ourselves. It would seem the trend means EA's new methods of fighting piracy (offering free downloadable content around launch), have been more effective than previous methods.

As for the system requirements, these aren't much increased over those for Mass Effect, so if you can run that one fine, you should be good here, too. Below is a comparison of the minimum and recommended specifications:

Divinity II vignette series debuts with Dragon Slayer

Looking forward to Larian Studios' RPG Divinity II: Ego Draconis? Oh, you are, you just don't know it yet.

The game, set for PC and Xbox 360, is a proper sequel to the acclaimed Divine Divinity, which boasts one of the worst titles in history, but has some of the best gameplay and story around. Ego goes full 3D and third person, throwing in the ability to transform into a dragon for good measure, complete with armor sets, abilities, and the like.

Kicking off today is a vignette series for the game, which will continue until its launch on January 5. The first -- titled "Dragon Slayer" -- is a broody little thing which gives a peek at the life of, you guessed it, dragon slaying. Enjoy.

Cary, NC, November 24, 2009 – cdv Software Entertainment USA and dtp entertainment are pleased to announce that the action-RPG Divinity II – Ego Draconis has gone gold. The game allows players to take on the role of a young Dragon Slayer, a hero with the ability to transform into a dragon, and take to the skies to fight against an onslaught of deadly creatures while protecting the citizenry of the game’s fantasy world. Divinity II – Ego Draconis will arrive in North American retail on January 5, 2010, and will be available for the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC.

EVE Online: Dominion Trailer

With the 12th free EVE Online expansion less than a week away, CCP has finally unveiled the Dominion feature page and published a superb trailer setting the stage for the expansion. The biggest feature of Dominion is the complete re-working of 0.0 sovereignty infrastructure which is bound to shake up warfare between huge alliances, leading into some epic fights. While EVE fleet battles are not quite as cool looking (or organized) as implied here, the trailer is close enough and succeeds in portraying the incredible feeling of massive EVE fleet battles.

(Available in full HD on YouTube or downloadable as 720p and 1080p)

In addition to the massive changes to sovereignty infrastructure, Dominion includes pirate faction epic arcs for PvE players who dare to dip into 0.0 space, new Fleet Finder tool for forming those epic fleets, upgraded planetary graphics (they now really do look as cool as in the trailer above), faction ship and capital ship rebalancing (with Titan doomsdays changed from area effect fleet killer to a single target superweapon of doom), new in-game browser based on Chrome and a new in-game mail system. The actual ratio of "fixing crappy old stuff" vs. "developing new shiny features" is heavily biased towards fixing old shortcomings and mistakes - some as old as EVE Online itself. New player experience also receives some additional content, including a new tutorial section that teaches the basics of PvP combat.

EVE Online: Dominion is scheduled to go live on 1st December 2009.

Dark Void video reveals The Watchers as primary foes

Capcom released a new Dark Void video today, and through it we see some of the baddies our hero Will has to contend with. These creatures are called "The Watchers," and as the video shows, there were a crap-ton of them running around.

One scene in particular suggests that perhaps these robot bodies are not their native forms, and another shows something transforming into a human. Yeah, that's not creepy at all or anything. There's no commentary with this video, but plenty of crazy lookin' enemies. Perhaps it's better this way, after the developers insulted the entire realm of Western gaming in their last developer diary. Ironically, the robotic bad guys look a lot like the sentient Geth from Mass Effect.

Has your interest been piqued? Dark Void will be out in North America on January 19 for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 -- January 22 for Europe. As for that upcoming film adaption starring Brad Pitt? We have no idea, and some of us are still hoping the movie news was an elaborate prank cooked up by someone's publicist spending too many hours with the company bong; video game movies make us cry inside.

Final two Star Wars: The Old Republic classes emerge

The Old Republic classes emerge

The cat is out of the bag, it seems: the final two classes that will be appearing in BioWare's PC MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic have been revealed.

The information first showed up in German magazine PC Games. Then Star Wars blog Darth Hater managed to score some time with BioWare producer Jake Norri, asking him questions concerning the new roles these classes will play:

"When you think of Sith Inquisitor, you’re thinking about how we’re talking about him today in the Emperor Palpatine mold, the force lightning using guy... We thought as core classes the Consular and the Inquisitor made the most sense. We thought they balanced well against the other two [Force classes]. You can think of the Jedi Knight and the Sith Warrior as more of a melee-style Jedi, and the other [new] two maybe more of the ranged-style Jedi. I think it made a lot of sense."

These two new classes look like they'll be the last; so all-in-all, there will be eight classes in the game (four Sith, four Jedi).

Star Wars: The Old Republic does not have a release date set; but, beta signups are underway so maybe a late 2010 showing may be possible.

Ezio is angsty in Assassins Creed II launch trailer

"I don't know who started this conspiracy; but I know who will end it."

Assassin's Creed II hit shelves just yesterday, and today we've got the launch trailer for you all. With all the competition out there this month, you may be debating which game to spend your hard-earned cash on.

Well, like any other publisher out to make some money of their own, Ubisoft released a tantalizing launch trailer, hoping that Ezio's rich accented voice and the game's general shininess will catch your attention. In this video, we again see Ezio's father at the gallows, while the poor (not literally) young man is left brimming with hatred. While he initially sets out on the assassin's path for revenge, he soon discovers that he is a part of something much bigger.

You'll need to play the game to learn more.

Company sues numerous MMO creators over patent

New York-based holdings company Paltalk Holdings just can't stand seeing these damn MMO publishers making money off their technology. So they did the only sensible thing they could think of: sue the crap out of everyone.

If Paltalk sounds familiar, you may remember them from a 2006 case, in which the company faced off against Microsoft over multiplayer technology found in Halo games. That particular incident was settled out of court mid-trial. While Paltalk didn't exactly win, they didn't actually lose either. Now they're going after the MMO developers and publishers, having named Sony, NCSoft, Activision Blizzard, Turbine Studios, and Jagex Ltd. in this latest patent lawsuit.

So what's the issue this time? Paltalk is asserting that the multiplayer technology that allows players to interact in the same digital environments simultaneously is currently theirs, following their 2002 purchase of various related patents. Now these big shots are using that very same technology in their respective games, which Paltalk sees as an obvious violation.

The suit was filed in Marshall, Texas, where Paltalk's case against Microsoft was also being tried. As it turns out, most patent legal lawsuits start there because its courts are considered plaintiff-friendly.

Modern Warfare 2 outsells predecessor on PC

Modern Warfare 2 outsells predecessor on PC

Despite having everything going against it (the PC userbase's higher standards, dropping almost all the features of Modern Warfare, and carrying a higher price tag), Modern Warfare 2 has already outsold its predecessor on the platform, says Infinity Ward developer Robert Bowling.

Sales numbers have been disturbingly high overall, as you know, but many likely didn't expect the PC release to do so hot in light of the changes. Not so, says Bowling in the developer's forums -- while the platform accounted for a very low 3 % of total sales, it has outsold the previous game with "tremendous" first week numbers.

PC games are almost always outdone by their console counterparts, of course, but we didn't realize it was more than 30 times as much, which makes the notion of dedicated servers almost seem absurd, given what's happened here. However, games like the upcoming Battlefield: 1943, Bad Company 2, and Aliens vs. Predator will have them in place, so all hope is not yet lost.

The Sims 3 1.7/2.2 patch available [Updated]

The Sims 3 1.7/2.2 patch available [Updated]

EA Play's massively successful The Sims 3 hasn't seen an update since the summer, so if anything's been bothering you since then, today's patch is likely to fix it.

It's a major one: version 1.5/1.6 adds some new tools to the Build/Buy mode, brings a huge amount of tweaks and fixes, some minor new functionality, and more.

It's important to note some users are experiencing problems as a result of the patch, including corruption of their file, inability to save and more. For the save issue, EA recommends for now to use the 'Save As...' function to create a new save game with the current data. Erring on the side of caution, you could wait until a newer version of the patch is out. Update: a newer patch has since been released, numbered 1.7/2.2 and fixing the save game incompatibility issue.

Anyhow, the release notes are far too big to post here, but check the source. The patch should be available via the EA Download Manager, but if you're paranoid like us and didn't install it, grab it via the alternate source below.

Left 4 Dead gets NES makeover

Left 4 Dead gets NES makeover

Left 4 Dead 2 may have ruined the first game for you with all its improvements, but how about "downgrading" to an NES version?

Gamer and programmer Eric Ruth is making a name for himself and his company Pixel Force with his own take on Left 4 Dead. He recently posted the first gameplay video, featuring the first mission from the "No Mercy" campaign. Ruth has promised to include all four campaigns in their entirety for the final game, though the video shows his progress as of November 15. The full game will be released on January 4, 2010, for free download.

Here are some details from the creator:

This game play footage gives you an idea of what the project looks like in action and how it plays. As you can see, it's a standard top-down 4 directional action/shooter. Remade in the NES retro style, the resolution is at 256 x 240 and features 16 colors and a 4 sound channel soundtrack.

Has Valve heard about this? Not yet, but Ruth is pretty sure they'll find his reimagining of their hit zombie shooter as entertaining as his followers. Anyway, check out the video below; it actually looks pretty fun!

EA releases Command & Conquer 4 gameplay trailer

EA releases Command & Conquer 4 gameplay trailer

Up until now, we've seen plenty of Command & Conquer 4 screenshots, but never any gameplay footage. So today, EA finally released the debut gameplay trailer, featuring plenty of crazy units you've likely been hearing about these past few months.

Set for release on March 15, Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight centers are a climactic moment in the ongoing conflict between GDI and the Brotherhood of Nod, as hinted in the announcement trailer. The two warring factions may need to cease their violent squabbling, as humanity teeters on the edge of extinction, with only six years left to prevent their own demise. Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty good reason to stop a war...

Anyway, enjoy the gameplay.

Guybrush Threepwood vanishes in final Monkey Island episode

Tales of Monkey Island is coming to an end with the final episode, Rise of the Pirate God, coming December 8. But a big problem has come to light: the hero, Guybrush Threepwood, has disappeared.

It seems that the mightiest pirate to ever grace the Caribbean has vanished without a trace along with his wife Elaine Marley-Threepwood as a result of the events in The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood . The inhabitants suspect Guybrush’s nemesis LeChuck (who has been thrice defeated in ghost, zombie, and demon forms) may have something to do with the missing couple, but even he is nowhere to be found. The answer to these mysteries, including other lingering questions, shall be revealed in this last episode. Or maybe they haven’t checked the water yet since Guybrush does have an uncanny talent for holding his breath underwater -- as long as 10 minutes.

Telltale Games is honoring the seemingly doomed pirate by offering the current four episodes of Tales of Monkey Island for $8.95 each. Already bought an episode? You also have the option of upgrading to get the remaining chapters at a discount price. Either way, don’t miss out on the long-awaited continuation of the Monkey Island series.
