Microsoft still backing PC as "first-class" gaming platform

Microsoft still backing PC as first-class gaming platform

With communication to Microsoft's (now former) Games for Windows Live general manager effectively shot, fears returned concerning the legitimacy of Microsoft Game Studios' long-term support for the PC as a competitive gaming platform. Such misgivings already fester amidst a backdrop of Microsoft axing internal studios, including the teams responsible for Age of Empires and Flight Simulator.

No doubt this triggered Microsoft's defense mechanism, and today the company stresses that the Games for Windows Live initiative remains as relevant as ever; any management shakeups are already being addressed with the goal of keeping the boat afloat.  Speaking to Edge Online:

Moving ahead, Microsoft will continue to invest in Windows as a first–class gaming platform through great Windows out of box experiences, our online gaming services including Games for Windows – LIVE, MSN Games, and Messenger games, and through new games for Windows developed by Microsoft Games Studios.

The position of the company's Windows-based PC gaming services head will now be occupied by two executives, General Manager Ron Pessner from the Entertainment & Devices Division and Dave Luehmann from Microsoft Games Studios. Microsoft also notes that Chris Early, the former Games for Windows Live boss, will in fact remain on board to serve in some capacity for Games for Windows Live as well as the Interactive Entertainment Business.
