Game tidbits: Warhammer 40K: Space Marines video; release dates & stuff

There was a games explosion on the Internet today, as pictured above.

For starters, a sorta-leaked 9 minute gameplay video of the yet officially announced Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines was posted on a few sites today. The game has a pretty strong Gears of War thing going on -- which is not a bad thing to have going on, by any means.

Here, recorder in moving pictures, some developer-type person gives the rundown of what you can expect out of Space Marines:

Between this game and Aliens: Colonial Marines, Space Marine fans -- such as myself -- have never had it better. If don't know better, a Space Marine is sort of like a regular, every day contemporary Marine, but much better. Instead of boring places like the Middle East, Space Marines are like, in space, and instead of fighting typical, commonplace humans, Space Marines fight creatures like aliens and mutants and robots, and stuff like that. And instead of rifles... they use rifles that have chainsaws attached to them. How cool is that? Very cool -- as I was saying, far cooler than your typical marine, these Space Marines are.

In other bits of gaming news, a couple of companies settled on some release dates:

The open-world, sadly Space Marine free Far Cry 2 is coming out to the UK on October 24th. I saw a live demo of this game, and trust me, this is it for the FPS on the PC. This game looks good enough to embarrass the rest of the entire genre. The graphics are great, the gameplay open-ended, and you can light stuff on fire. How cool is that ? Extraneously cool! Not as cool as Space Marines, but very cool nonetheless.

The next game in the ever-popular LEGO series, LEGO Batman is coming on October 10th now, which isn't all that far away at all. In this game, Batman does something he has never done, and takes on the criminals of Gotham City such the Riddler, Two Face, and some famous drug abusing actors. How cool is that? Medium cool!

E.A's popular shooty-shooty-bang-bang run for cover and throw some grenades game, Call of Duty: World at War, has had its release date set: the game will drop on November 14th. The game is coming out for pretty much every console, as well as the PC. This Call of Duty game is being made by Treyarch studio, and they are bringing the FPS back to its routes, and setting the fun in everyone's favorite and most stimulating war, good ole W.W II.

And now for two 'gone gold' announcements: what I believe will be a come-from-nowhere surprise hit, Turk-made medieval combat and strategy game Mount & Blade has gone gilden, after a very long time spent in open beta. It's a true delight -- I've been playing this game for sometime now and it is pretty sweet. No game has better combat on horseback, I can promise you that much. The game combines realistic-style, large-scale medieval battles of you and like 200 other troops, while you try to take over a fictional land of Caldria using bows, lances, two handed swords, hammers, knives, clubs, pole-arms, axes, and other weapons. This game being a personal favorite of mine at the moment, expect more to be written about it in the coming month! (If you feel up to it, you can check out the a demo here.)

Below is a in-game video of an earlier build of the game, courtesy of Neo-addict Subtle Demise. The quality is a bit lower, and the framerates are better in-game, but nonetheless this vid will give you a decent idea of the combat in Mount & Blade:

Also gone gold is the Mac version of the one of the better selling games of all time, Call of Duty 4. EA's gaming overseers predict CoD #4 to be in stores on September 15th.
