Cryptic Studios brings gamers and Star Trek fans a bit of good news, today the company announces that they've sealed a deal with CBS for the rights to develop and publish Star Trek Online as a massively multiplayer online title for the PC and console, the information doesn't directly lead there in there in the release but through a bit of digging it seems that they're aiming this to be multiplatform. One can only hope that maybe Cryptic goes the extra mile and makes it cross compatible as well to really give a feel of a diverse universe.
The information on the title is currently quite limited with all the details really being in reserve for the annual Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas next month, on August 10th though they'll be doing a live global webcast for all to view on startrekonline.com. There will be a running registration right now for people to get in on it but I'm sure someone will have the debut video on the internet shortly after.
Cryptic currently has this to say about the game:
Powered by the Cryptic Engine, Star Trek® Online will be developed for both console and PC formats. With customizable ships and characters from the Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets, ground, space and shipboard gameplay and unique options for player-generated content set in the Star Trek universe, Star Trek Online is the MMOG that allows you to boldly go where no one has gone before!
It sounds like there's a lot to expect out of the game, personally I think it'll be interesting to see how all these Sci-Fi franchises play together as they all arrive around the same time. In the meantime lets just enjoy the various teaser images they've released so far.
